I put my return in the box anyways. Should I now file online. What is the penalty if my tax return gets postmarked 4/18/07?

CA. Yep it's midnight but certain post offices are open later than others I assume and the branch near my work seems to not want to stay late. What would be the late penalty?

They were there but behind locked doors. I don't know what this means. Hopefully they'll get to it. Are late ones more prone to an audit

are you getting a refund?

your penalty is based on the amount you owe, if you owe $0 , then , generally, your penalty will be X% of $0 , so it won't matter

if you owe, then you'll have to figure something out

The deadline is today if you owe money. If you are owed a refund, the deadline is within 3 years of today in order to get a refund.

Uncle Sam doesn't mind collecting that sweet interest... Of course, when you collect it you have to pay taxes on it...

I guess I would have driven to a different post office.

As for penalty, if they postmark it tomorrow, you will owe a penalty if you owed money with your return. If, on the other hand, you are getting a refund, being a day late makes no difference at all.

At this point, just wait to see if they send you a bill. Who knows? Maybe you'll get the nice IRS person who says, "Close enough."

I think up to 30 days late it is 5% of the amount you had to send in (extra) + maybe some interest.. I know it will cost you something now.
