Went to see Rogue One. Really good btw, I was a bit surprised. But I noticed something during the Previews. I rarely go to the movie theatre, maybe 3 times a year but this time I noticed something.

Out of 8 previews, all but one was a sequel/prequel/reboot. I assume they target previews based upon the movie you are about to see, so if I was viewing a romcom I would guess the previews would be different. And I am not arguing against all sequels/prequels/reboots but it's starting to feel excessive. I understand the irony that I was watching a movie that is also part of a series of movies and am now speculating whether there is too much of that or not, but I don't believe they all should go, just some of them. I mean I've seen one Fast 7 Furious movie ever and it sucked. I don't think I've seen a single Transformers movie either. But anyway...

I saw previews for:

A new Transformers movie
Fast & Furious 18
Logan - aka more Wolverine stuff
Despicable Me3
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Pirates of the Caribbean
Spiderman reboot

and

The only movie that was a standalone was some funny looking animated story about a cartoon baby who was real smart and wanted to escape babyhood. It actually looked good.

Of all the other previews, only Guardians of the Galaxy looked good.

What's going on Hollywood?

It depends entirely on the franchise and who is working on this iteration of it.

I'd watch a third Gerard Butler "... Has Fallen" ripoff of Die Hard, or another Riddick, Deadpool or GoTG.

Pirates of the Caribbean? Loved the first one, was mostly bored by the second and third, haven't gotten around to watching the fourth. They should have made Tim Powers' On Stranger Tides as itself not as a PotC sequel.

Of course it should be judged by quality and who's involved. But 7 of 8 previews? Felt excessive. Especially since besides Guardians of the Galaxy and maybe Logan, they are all going to suck.

You're just now realizing this?

I've just accepted that Hollywood does not make movies for me any more. No ranting about how they're "raping/ruining my childhood" or anything, I just don't spend money going to movies much. There's more than enough content to keep me happy. I've even come around to not really caring much about remakes, even when its of movies I like and am certain they won't improve upon.

The thing is, I'm concerned about what will come after this once these start to not make enough money (they have to at some point, right?). I've seen some people say that it will force Hollywood to come up with new ideas. I'm not optimistic about that (I think they'll just try to cut costs and risks, doing stuff like cut live actors out entirely so that they can then literally own the looks and everything, and then they can replace them as they see fit while paying the people making the stuff as little as possible, I know Marvel wishes they could tell RDJr to hit the road so that he can stop costing them $50million for 5 minutes of actual onscreen time; plus they won't have to worry if the actor wants to stop doing it or dies or anything like that).
