I think the CLS550 was in the close to 400 HP/TQ range and sticker was in the lower 60s. Lotta car for the money. The only thing was the lack of comfort in the rear seats - they were buckets with not much leg room. Pretty good sized trunk though. But it was one sexy looking car.

382 hp, forget the tq numbers off the top of my head.

My dad bought a 2006 E55 earlier this year.... holy jizm is it nice! A friend of a friend of a friend (lol) has a 2001 viper and we went out to an airport (no longer in use) and went toe to toe. I pulled on him each time (granted he had a hard time off the line)... i also pitted it against my R6 (streetbike) and was only able to beat it off the line till 50MPH, then it ruined me.

Those AMGs are no joke. Too bad my dad got pissed about me roasting the tires and wont let me drive it anymore haha.

It was no fun going from that back to my '96 integra... oh well... i tasted the good life 🙂

I don't know if you have heard of it but he brought home a McClarin once too. That is nearly 800hp. That one was even faster. The thing was a v12. I literally crapped myself when I saw the gas gauge moving down when accelerating haha.

if you're talking about the slr it has a 612hp supercharged V8, but i bet it pulls like a v12

Enter the CLS63 AMG. Sweet, sweet ride. 500 hp, 465 lb 6.2 liter V-8.
Then we have the god awful sexy SL55 AMG. 490 hp, 516 lb, 5.4 liter supercharged V-8. Sick

I just asked on the SL55 - what's the top speed? "Goverened at 186". After some chit chat he asked if I'd like to drive one...

OMG!!!!!!!!! I'm in love with both of these. The feel of both cars is race-track worthy with ridiculous amounts of power. Smooth rides with little chassis roll and a comfortable combination of sports car and creature comforts. Putting the pedal down on either of these is a gut wrenching action hoping you actually have enough rubber to keep them down.

Mercedes is putting out some bodacious cars and living up to their heritage IMHO. Just like the beloved Ms from BMW, whatever AMG does - it works.

You only looked at AMG stuff? Well theres your problem.

Thats like comparing a 03 SVT Cobra with any other mustang that on the lot that isn't a '03 SVT Cobra... duh!

Ie: you're looking at the top of the line AMG stuff, not the run of the mill cheap junk that most people actually drive.

I personally dont care for any Mercedes that isn't a AMG.

Maybe I'm old & cheap, maybe I just don't make enough. I can't ever see spending this much money on a car. Ever. They're the worst 'investment' ever. I had a hard time spending $30 on my current car USED.

Don't get me wrong - cars like this (not that I've driven an AMG) are great rides. I just don't see $10k+ a year in depreciation being a good decision for anyone.

Thats because your seeing a car as an 'investment'. Your tv is not an investment. You use it and it drops a lot in value over the 3-5yrs+ of it's life time. If you just use it until it goes dead then that isn't so bad.

Granted I bought a cheap £600 car myself 😛. I'd definately buy nicer cars if I had loads of £££.

:thumbsup: spider, I'd take an M3 or M5 over them though 😛. I wouldn't get a run of the mill BMW or MB though...

Hey, how is that new E55 holding up? My dad made the mistake of buying an '03 E55 when they first came out and it had so many reliability issues that within 18 months, it had spent 120+ days in the dealer's garage, surrounded my mechanics with question marks over their heads. Finally MB just bought the car back for the original purchase price. It was really disappointing because the car kicked so much ass! My dad has an SL600 now and it works great. Just wanting to see if MB has "fixed" their issues with the earlier E55's... the biggest one was a nasty chirp whenever you accelerated, as well as clunky drivetrains, radios coming out of the dash upon hard acceleration, and some issues with the cellphone center console hookup.

the Price Tags on them is pretty sweet also 😛

EDIT: Sweet for the dealership and the Manufacturer 😉

I kept bringing up my Favorite Car. The M5. Salesguy started talking about Motor Trend or some other car mage actually picking an AMG over the M5.

Either way, these things are the perfect blend of sport and comfort. Something that as I get older I appreciate. Even the non-AMG CLS55 was very nice.

Unfortunately my girl fell in love with the ML500. In the middle of all this glory all she could think of was "look, it's got fold down seats!" 🙁

I thought all of those 2 digit benzes were AMG

CLS 63 AMG (500HP/465lb-ft) & SL 55 AMG (490HP/516lb-ft)-->0-60 4.5s
2006 Pontiac GTO (400HP/400TQ, ~$32K MSRP)-->0-60 4.6s
2006 Corvette C6 (400HP/400TQ, $44K+ MSRP)-->0-60 4.2s
2006 Corvette C6 Z06 (505HP/470TQ, $77K MSRP)-->0-60 3.5s

EDIT
Now mind you these won't drive quite like the Mercedes, but if you're looking for bang for your buck...

2003 SVT Cobra (390HP/390TQ, ~$25k)-->0-60 4.5s

It's not a currently produced model, hence the price on the used market for one in excellent shape and unmodified. It's also underrated from the factory, so its more like 425HP. A few simple and cheap modifications (intake, exhaust, pulley, tune) will get 500+ HP/500+ TQ to the wheels and get that 0-60 in less than 4s. Upgraded fuel system and Kenne Bell or Whipple twin screw will start to get you to the 600-700 HP mark to the wheels and start getting that 0-60 in the 3s range and high 9s in the 1/4, and you'll still have spent only $35k-40k and have 4 seats and AC. 😀

And smoking some snobby kid in his daddy's Benz is priceless.

MB makes a nice car but I would never own one up here. Even the AMGs are too commonplace, I see lots of CL55s on a regular basis.

If you go into a bunch of garages up here and walk down the rows MB and BWM (almost always black too) outnumber any other maker very handily. My dad actually lost his car once (2005 E500) because it was in the lot with about 15 other black MBs. I told him to walk around pushing the unlock button until he found it.

They dont even look in my general direction. 😛

that is because you have a CS degree and not the super-duper awesome IS degree which will open all doors for you, even in fields such as medicine and welding. I also heard from spidey07 that an IS degree will allow you to skip to the front of the line at Disney World, and a private meeting with Mickey!!!

It depends what you drive in... from my experience I don't get any attention when i park kinda far and just walk in, but when I pull my with my CLK right in front of the show room, they practively apporach me. 🙂

In my experience they don't give you the time of day if you don't obviously have money. I had to go pick up a car that my father bought from the local MB dealer since he was out of town (replacing a 1987 Saab 900 turbo :Q ) and I had the worst time getting anyone to help until I finally found the salesman who sold him the car.

True,
when I got the the dealer after work (business attire) and driving my car, I have no problems getting service. The one time I walked in wearing shorts and tshirts, I was pretty much invisible to the sales guys.

I used to work for a MB dealer when I got out of college. I would go and pickup the clients cars so they wouldn't have to drive to the dealer for service. If for some reason they didn't want a loaner car (C class) I would have to drive a crappy Geo metro to pick up their car. Lol, some of the clients would ask me to park the Geo a block or so away from their house/office so no one would see it. It was a pretty fun job, I got paid to drive a lot of cars I can never afford.
