Went shooting the other day

Went to the backwoods of PDX and shot two different HK .45s (UST and Tactical, I think). I also shot a 12 gauge semi-auto shotgun (dang that recoil).

This is my 2nd time shooting, and now I'm hooked. People have been recommending me HK and Sig Sauer. I just want to get one for target shooting, not self defense. Recommendations? A cheap as possible, of course 😀.

Next time you shoot that same 12 gauge semi-auto, ask to let you use some turkey shot; preferably a magnum load. It'll recoil less... trust me. 😛 🙂

Truthfully, for target shooting, I'd start you with a .22
That's what most kids who grow up shooting start with (besides pellet guns). You can get a decent one with a cheap scope for about $150... should be able to hit a 3 inch circle at 100 yards with that. Or, if you spend a little more, you can greatly improve on that accuracy.

If you like loud noise, and don't need to shoot round after round rapidly, muzzleloaders seem to be really gaining in popularity. It's ironic that there's a special season for them in NY, since they can also be used during shotgun (slugs only) season for deer. They're much more accurate than a shotgun, hitting accurately out to a couple hundred yards.

My first (and only, so far) gun was a Springfield XD-9.
My next gun, if I find the money for it somewhere, will probably be a Remington 700 of some sort.

If you want good advice checkout the forums here

They are currenlty down for maintance though(last 30 minutes)

P.S if your just going to plink, I'd recommend a 9mm(cheaper than .45ACP) or a .22LR(even cheaper)

Remeber to factor in ammo cost. a $150 rifle would be of no use if you can't afford the ammo to go with it.

If you just want something cheap to plink with, get a .22 caliber rifle or pistol. The ammo is dirt cheap and you can get a good gun for $150ish. Winchest, Ruger and Marlin all make good .22 rifles. Ruger also makes good .22 pistols. A .22 will teach you all the basics of marksmanship at minimal cost. Don't buy and HK or a Sig as those are both tactical pistols designed primarily for combat and they're rather expensive. Even with a 9mm, ammo costs will greatly outweigh that of a .22.
