Went kayaking

I went on a 2-day trip down the Colorado River with 3 friends from work on Monday and tuesday. It was a blast. The weather was perfect, there were barely any other people on the river, and we got some good pictures. Check out my pic's below and a short video of a cave called Rain Cave.

I'm on the right in "The Cast" picture. Ignore the double chin 😱. I'm working on that 😉.

EDIT: the 2 very blurry pics are of a cavern called Sauna Cave. It is about 120-130 degrees inside, and it's just like a sauna. I was drenched in sweat after walking 50 feet in, and walking back out.

Wow nice!
I've done a lot of sea kayaking on Georgian Bay an offshot of Lake Huron - good times and lots of open water puncuated by many islands... white water kayaking is pretty fun though. I don't see many rapids in the pics 🙁

There were no rapids. It's a nice stretch for a beginner like me 🙂.

Ah, I see. 🙂

It's a great past time. What was your on water training like? Any rolls or wet exits practised or performed? I love being dragged underwater through rapids trying not to smash my face while fighting to right myself; good times, good times. 😛

My training so far has consisted of a kayaking techniques DVD. I've only gone a few times so far. I'm seriously contemplating buying a kayak of my own.

Well if you're going to be utilizing a skirt then I highly recommend doing a half dozen supervised wet exits before even attempting to take the boat onto open water. That pic of the hoover damn at the end of the canyon is incredible, I'm extremely jealous.

Plastic or Fiberglass boat?
Here's a small FAQ about buying a first boat. Choose what's most suited to your style and budget; I'd go with one of the nicer plastics to start with. Personally, between my father and I we have two fiber and one plastic - I'm usually taking the latter for it's durability and ease of maintenance.

Thanks for the good info. I will definitely get some training in rolling before making use of a skirt.

Skirts are for when you're looking at open water or rapids. It isn't too much fun to be waterlogged on a day trips by pesky swells 😉

Unfortunately they also have the penchant of keeping you stuck in the boat when it's upside down and you're drowning.

If you are sticking to calm, shallow water then it'll be a while before you need to look at getting a skirt too.

It started just below hoover dam, and went about 8.5 miles to Willow Beach. We were on the water for a total of about 9-10 hours over 2 days.

Wow, I'd love to go on a multi-day trip kayaking.. I've gone on a 4 day trip into a wilderness area via canoe, but haven't been in the canoe since I purchased my first kayak. (and after that, I've purchased a kayak for each of my boys and for my wife.)

If you think you're hooked now, wait til you start going through some mild whitewater. Having gone through whitewater (or whatever you would call 1-200 yards of 3 foot tall standing waves) on the Genesee river at flood stage, I'm ready to purchase a whitewater kayak to get more serious.
