yes, they can and do get that huge. in one of my mothers old books i have in storage are some newspaper clippings where a man caught a channel cat that was as tall as he was and weighed a couple of hundred pounds. it was from like 1940 or something, way before photo chopping was around.

Sticking your hand under logs, in mud, etc in a shallow river attempting to grab a big catfish in the mouth. Crazy motherfvckers. I've met a guy who lost 2 fingers because he reached into an alligator snapping turtle's mouth.

The photograph is a real one, and the fish pictured may actually weigh close to 140 pounds, but the picture wasn't taken at Lake Texoma (and the fish shown isn't a blue catfish). It's a photograph taken out of context from a French web site devoted to catfish angling and circulated with a fictional explanation, created a mixed bag of "real photo, inaccurate description."
