Diner finds finger in chili
Thursday, March 24, 2005 Posted: 7:13 AM EST (1213 GMT)

SAN FRANCISCO, California (Reuters) -- A diner at a Wendy's fast food restaurant in San Jose, California, found a human finger in a bowl of chili prepared by the chain, local officials said Wednesday.

"This individual apparently did take a spoonful, did have a finger in their mouth and then, you know, spit it out and recognized it," said Ben Gale, director of the department of environmental health for Santa Clara County. "Then they had some kind of emotional reaction and vomited."

Local officials launched an investigation after the incident Tuesday night and the medical examiner determined Wednesday that the object was a human finger.

Officials are trying to determine whether the finger came in the raw materials Wendy's used to prepare the chili, Gale said.

Wendy's International Inc. corporate office did not immediately return a call for comment. Wendy's is the third-largest hamburger chain.

I don't think I'll be eating at Wendy's any time soon. :disgust:

I thought that they made their chili from unused burgers right in the store.

IIRC, McDonalds was actually the cleanest. Wendy's wasn't *too* bad, though.

I ate there 90% of work days last summer... never had a problem with that location, it's the cleanest one I've seen. :)

<edit>

I was talking about the Wendy's on Hamilton, close to the 33 exchange... beside Bob Evan's.

I know which one you're talking about. I used to live close to there. I haven't eaten at that one before though. There are only like 4500 Wendys in Columbus :)

I'm not sure that 4500 includes the suburbs such as Groveport, Reynoldsburg, and Pickerington :p

But for the love of anything precious to you, *nobody* go to a Wendy's in Lancaster. I've never seen a restaurant so filthy... at least the one on East Main. The one inside River Valley isn't bad.

Dateline did the fast food cleanliness thing recently. See the results here. McDonalds rated the worst of the top ten fast food chains the surveyed. Wendy's was ok at third. I'm sure that the cases with the fingers are very unique circumstances and surpass what food inspectors normally look for when they do a surprise inspection.

They did when I worked at a Wendy's in '86. I am wondering if one of the employees is missing a finger.

Hopefully Wendy's will start pointing fingers....because then they'll be able to tell that guy pointing with the missing finger is the one that lost it ;)

I hope that person nails them with a big lawsuit and when Wendy's has to knuckle under, his bank balance will have a whole lot of digits.

My usual order is a "Double-stack, no pickle"

I guess the next time I go I'll say "Double-stack, no pickle, no finger"
