Alright, so here's the story:

Last Wednesday I left school a few hours early to get home for Thanksgiving (about a 5 hour drive) and in doing so I missed my physics class. We have these little in class response questions that you use a remote to answer. Anyways, since my friend was staying I gave him my remote to answer for me. So, I get a call from my friend while I'm en route and he says that the professor counted the students in class and the number of responses and obviously there was a discrepancy, so everyone present had to sign a sheet saying they didn't cheat so he could compare who answered and who signed.

Anyways, skip to today he was like "Well this is a very serious thing" blah blah blah and said if the people who did it are in the class they should come forward afterward to talk to him. So I just bit the bullet and told him I did it after class. About three other people basically lied and said they were there they just left early/didn't sign/etc. so I was really the only sucker. So we go to his office I just fess up pretty straightforward, tells me I'll lose about 10% off my grade minimum, and asks me to tell him the friend's name. I say I can't do that... he tells me to talk it over with my friend and bring a name when I come to the meeting with him and some other profs to decide my punishment., and if I don't tell him the name the punishment will be "much worse" for me.

Cliff notes:
- Had a friend answer in-class question for me with remote (so I could leave early)
- Got caught by prof, fessed up after class today
- Met with prof, told me I lose 10% of grade minimum
- Prof asked me for friend's name, I refuse (respectfully)
- Prof sets up meeting with other profs and me
- Prof says punishment "much worse" for me if I don't tell my friend's name

I'm not asking for advice on what to do, I already know what I'm gonna do. I'm the idiot here, and I'm just going to say in the meeting that I did it, I asked my friend to answer for me, and I told him about the situation but I can't make him come confess. I'll just say I'm coming to you honestly and willingly but I can't make my friend do that and if that means more severe punishment, well, I guess that's what it means.

Oh well, sucks that such a minor thing I didn't think twice about is biting me in the ars later :(

UPDATE #1: Still waiting on professor to email me with info on a meeting. Will update again once meeting is set and once I go in...

These little orange infrared remotes with A,B,C,D,E on them. The serial # is tied with your student ID so it records your answers. There's a question every class.

what'll happen to your friend if you give up his name? does he lose 10% too?

if punishment "much worse" = failing grade, then just retake it later..
if punishment "much worse" = expulsion, then throw a going away party :D

what you did sounds pretty harmless to me.

my feeling is that the other prof will laugh at your phys professor when he comes to them with this sh!t.

Someone with honor wouldn't have put his friend in that situation in the first place.

He might just be BSing you to scare you for now. Either way, you know the thing to do. While your friend is just as guilty for participating in the cheating, if he doesn't want to come forward then you need to take the fall. GL and hopefully this'll teach you that there is always someone else one step ahead

Are you saying that academic dishonesty is no big deal? I bet the faculty and administration will see it a bit differently...

Somone hasn't been to college, huh? They take cheating VERY seriously nowadays. I doubt the other professors will laugh.

If you explain your story calmly and accept blame you might be able to get off lighter. I had a friend who got caught cheating and she was suspended for a year.

I would hope they do.

Personally anyone caught cheating should be kicked out of the college and not allowed back in. But since he did admit to it then he should just get kicked out for the rest of the year.

you may not think something like this is serous but many people do.

I thought it was pretty harmless as well, but obviously my prof disagrees.

If I turn my friend in he'll get 10% off as well (probably), but if I don't turn him in I might be able to get away with just losing more points, it's possible I will fail the course (but he did say they would have to go to the honor council for that and they dont want to do that), but I won't be expulled because I did come to him voluntarily.

And yes, it does suck very much to be me... but man this really did come out of nowhere. If I even suspected for a second he would be this concerned about it I wouldn't have risked it... yeesh. I mean, this isn't exactly a formal quiz, the whole class talks during the question.

Honestly, there is no good answer. For some people, inlcuding myself, cheating is a very serious offense. Perhaps I focus more on the lack of integrity and others focus on punishments and stuff.

All I can tell you is to speak with your friend and then choose what YOU feel is best for YOU. If this prof. is hell on getting you in trouble, it might get real ugly with both of you getting expelled, but then again, you might jsut get a slap on the wrist whereby they were just trying to teach you a lesson abotu honestly and honor.

Hell, even at the community college that I go to, IIRC, you can indeed get expelled or at least flunk the term if you get caught cheating. Worst of all, cheating is quite rampant, and I had to make a serious effort to keep people from cheating off of me. Sadly, I think one of my cacl teachers mistook me for a cheater and always gives me a piercing glare. Not only did I NOT cheat but he was also my favorite teacher:(

Anyways, prepare for the worst if at all possible by going all-out on yoru apology. Pay your friend $50 or somethign to go in there with you and apoligize. Let them know that your only intention was to spend more time with your family and that this was what clouded your judgement. Let them know, if true, that you are an honest person, and that you indeed feel remourseful.

etc.

No way in hell I would rat out my friend (or some random guy for that matter). If the professor is any kind of man, he would understand and give you brownie points for your morals, hence, cancelling out your 10% decrease. :)

its difficult to justify what i'm saying, but there are "degrees" to cheating. i feel that what the OP did is relatively harmless in this "cheating scale."

im not saying that this makes it ok, but that expelling the OP from school (or even failing him for the semester) is completely ridiculous. i believe he's learned his lesson.

What would happen here at Maryland is you would probably stand before a council and be awarded an XF for the course on your transcript, which means you failed the course due to cheating.

yeap

His friend wouldn't have done this if he didn't feel comfortable doing it. And if he did it, without really wanting to do it, he's just a spineless friend who will bend over for anyone and I have no sympathy for him.

I agree.

I think both of them should get kicked out of college. I have no sympathy for either of them and hope they get punished by the university to the fullest extent possible.

Seriously dont rat your friend.

Also is this a test or quiz? Does it count for anything?

I mean go up to him, tell him you left early to travel 5 hours, that it is (FACT) the worst traffic day of the year and that you dont think what you did warrents a 10% off your grade. Dont let this teacher pull one over on you. Go see him and tell him whats up. Speak rationally and dont yell. Ask him to put himself in your shoes.

like i said, there are degrees to cheating. i believe an acceptable punishment is giving you a 0% on the quiz, with a possible reduction in your overall grade depending on how things work out for the rest of the semester.

i, too, believe that cheating is a very serious offense. however, as demonstrated, it can be tricky when it comes time to assign a punishment that properly fits the severity of the offense.

Grades aren't everything.

Honor, integrity and friendship is more important to me.

If I was your friend and you ratted me out for something as stupid as using a remote for a friend, don't ever talk to me again.
