Welp, I crashed at Big Willow / Willow Springs

It took 3 months to total it? Yikes

what happened was the initial estimate was less than what was needed to bring the bike back to new (as work was done, more stuff was found).

once the extra stuff was found, the total cost of repairs exceeded 75% of the bike's value.

i've never had a vehicle totaled, so i have no idea what my options are. hell, the remaining issues are cosmetic. can i just take it as is to avoid totaling it?
 
I never went through the process, I was kept being told that, let the insurance total it, cut you a check, and then you buy it right back (not sure how), and then you chop it up and sell it as parts. Or, fix it and ride it again
 
If you can and its issues are all cosmetics, see if you can buy it back, strip it of the blinkers and other non essentials. Then see if you can get some cheap unpainted 3rd party fenders and get a cheap paint job on them. Then you have a cheap decent track only bike and use the rest of the money to get a decent street only bike.

It amazes me that we leather up for track days but we don't think twice about riding on the street in a t-shirt and jeans.


Not me man. Depending on the weather or length of the ride, my pick of Kevlar lined jeans, perforated leathers, my Rukka Gore Pro gear, or the one piece Teiz commuter suit, with one of three sets of gloves/gauntlets and riding boots.

Having been flipped over the bars after getting hit on the street and walking away from it with just a few bruises, no gear, no ride.

so the bike will end up completely fixed, but totaled by the insurance company. because it's a total loss, they will buy it from me (and i have the option to buy it back). my main concern is how the cost of my insurance will change. if it goes up astronomincally, there is little point to owning (or at least insuring) the bike.

Your insurance covers racetrack damage?

apparently! i told them exactly what happened, and that it was not a racing event but a track day - learning to ride the course, no timekeeping, no competition

If this is your first claim, I can't imagine your insurance going up at all.
 
Since you do track days, the answer is let them total it and buy it back as a track only bike. Screw cosmetics.

I dumped my sv650 at autobahn country club a few years back. Other than being a little scary it was just minor stuff as well. Pegs/bars/mirrors and some scuffs.
 
That is a requirement of doing a track day actually. You will not be allowed to ride if you show up wearing jeans.

I have known quite a few riders that went to the track to race (AFM)- and most of them are dead.
I'm still here.
Street rider, just back it off a little on the street and you will be fine.

I always love people with anecdotal examples. Well I know a lot of street riders that are dead. But none of my track buddies have died. But I am not going to use one over the other. The two things I will say is that a track is usually better set up to be safer for the rider in the area where they are likely to go off and have medical closer to you encase of an incident.
Death's per accident are going to be lower for not only that reason but also because a tremendous amount of people wear almost nothing when riding on the streets.

You could say a fully suited street rider leisurely taking a stroll down the street is going to be the safest. But even the people best dressed don't always have 20 minutes to waste to get ready and another 20 minutes to get out of the getup and into the other clothes they brought. Even they will be like screw it every once and a while. At those times they would be safer on track where they can never make that decision.

had i gone down on the street, i may have

1) hit a tree
2) hit a guard rail
3) fallen off a cliff
4) been run over by a passing vehicle

the fact that there was nothing around me besides dirt means that the chances of me NOT walking away are actually pretty low. if you go down on the street, your odds are much worse.

They die at the track? Also doing track days is a little safer than full on racing. Nothing is on the line, people aren't taking the same risks for position or running as close the the edge of the limit. Crashing on a track usually means bruises and scrapes. Maybe broken bones as you'll slide and tumble. A lot less abrupt stops on a track and an ambulance is on site already.

result = bike in perfect condition; paid off loan; +$800 to me; and as-yet-to-be-determined insurance rate increases (i'm hoping they don't bend me over come december...we'll see!)
