this is about my car-puter. i got everything working, the palm was doing everything correctly, i got everything to connect in the car correctly, i was taking it outside, got it all out there, and boom. palm wont see the god damn computer.

i turn it off, try again.

same result.

i take the thing to my patio, plug it in there.

same result.

i took it inside, up to my room.

hook it up to monitor/keyboard/mouse.

motherboard starts beeping. i plug the monitor in a little harder, it works.

works perfectly.

take it back downstairs, hook it into the wall in my nook.

doesnt work.

i try again

doesnt work

i try again.

doesnt work.

i take it back upstairs, try again with varying components (motherboard, keyboard)

nothing works. i look at it again.

it's stopping at scandisk. 1%. will not go past that. i try to get it to go past it by keyboard inputs, it's frozen. i try to get it to go into safe mode, wont do it. keeps going back trying to do a disc scan.

when it tries to load windows, says it cant find some dll file.

so, i think the memory's a POS, the computer wont turn on without a monitor or keyboard hooked to it, and the hard drive is now failed.

this is so fvcking annoying i'm about to throw the POS out my window. i simply dont know what to do at this point. i have a 40 gig hard drive, but i doubt win98 lite would read it. i need to buy some new memory, too, apparently.

i think i may just buy some decent memory, and be done with this win 9x sh1t. then i can use XP pro, and get the damn thing loading in some decent time.

so the hard drive is fvcked, the memory is fvcked, and the computer apparently wants a keyboard and monitor.

Well, first of all, if you didn't simulate the car environment (no monitor/kb/mouse) before installing it, that was stupid. :p

And secondly, if you ran your carputer without some sort of UPS or power management/filtering inbetween, that was also stupid and probably cost you a hard drive.

i ran it with a surge strip in between.

EDIT: and i also ran it while it was hooked to the KVM switch, but without the switch pointed at it.

I think I need a car puter. And a driver so that I can play games whilst being driven the entire 1 block to my workplace.

Either way, Walleye, you need a cheap UPS to smooth the power. Set it to "shut down after 30 seconds" and you won't even need to worry about powering off your carputer first.

And oh yeah - stress-test the crap outta the thing. Nothing will scream "loser" louder than your machine dying of heat failure and skipping your MP3s at high volume. :D

Also, shock-mount your HD if possible. If you can't, then shock-mount the whole rig with some bolts and heavy-duty bungee cables.

One last thing.

alright... i have a cheap ups unit i could easily use, i have a 40 gig hdd from my other computer.. i would rather run winxp, but that means i need to get, what, at least 256 mb pc133?

how would i shock mount the hard drive?

i was intending on in the end, mounting the rest of the aluminum i got in there with foam padding of some sort, and bungie cording over the top so that it wouldnt go anywhere, but stay relatively shock resistant.

and car and puter.

256MB will handle basic audio playback quite nicely.

Mount it on something like a 3.5"-5.25" adaptor, and bungee it to the top. Add foam buffering top and bottom. Mount the drive vertically, unless you like headcrashes when you hit rough roads or speedbumps.

Cool, ammocan PC. That a VIA EPIA board? Check out the folk at mini-itx.com if you haven't already - there's a few projects there that might give you some ideas. OT - I love the "Radiosphere" project. :D

KVMs (as far as I know) simulate a keyboard and mouse signal to "fool" the computer into booting & working, even if you've got the real keyboard and mouse pointed to another system. This could be why it worked in your room and not in the car. No idea why anything would have died though.

most likely i fried the hard drive... or the hard drive got slammed a few too many times...

it's no problem for me to stick the kvm in the car. no big deal. i wont have much use for it anyway, seeing as i'm giving my second comp to my father.
