Well, I don't think you'll see this but hopefully you won't need any luck. Hope it works out for you...

You have my thanks, and my respect.

18 weeks of fun of course. Guns, close combat, etc :p Im going in as a 95b, Military Police. Reserves for now while I do some college, but the goal is to go active with a different job in a year or two.

good luck but i still don't understand the people that decide to join any military service branch especially with the danger that comes with that kind of job consider how many wars we seems to initate and the pay is not alot comparing to the danger of getting shot, taken as pow or even getting killed by enemy of friendly fire(blue on blue)

Pride for your country. Patriotism. You live in this country free of (most) of the evils of the world because of the proud an honorable men and women who served in our military. It's those people who risk their lives that grant you that freedom.

Good luck Bill, do us proud. I may be heading to BT myself in a couple months, still deciding on that though.
I don't buy that. We've certainly toppled monsters abroad before, but America itself hasn't faced a direct threat to our independence in a long time.

That said, there are other advantages to joining the military besides serving your nation or the shoddy pay. You can also get up to $50,000 for college, there's a large sign-up bonus, and the military offers you quite a bit of education.

TallBill, congratulations on entering our nation's armed forces. I salute you. Best of luck, and godspeed to you.

so basically biggest insentives that solders have today is money. If army took away the 50,000 and took away the bonus would people still join the army?

Ok I just got back from boot camp in fort hell wood 2 months ago. WOW !! I'm a 12B combat engineer w/ national guard. Let me tell you what the process is like. You are going to be shipped off ST. Louis at about 9pm you will take a bus to the base you will end up at the "43rd" you will be processed there for about a week. This is the transition. You probally wont get much sleep the first day so sleep on the bus/plane. You will be housing with MPs, combat enineers, and chemical at the 43rd. You will have to stand in parade rest for most of your day waiting for chow, getting identionication, shots, vision tests, and clothing. You wont see ANY drill sergants except the night you get there. but during the week you will only be around sergents or drill sergents in training. This is the place where they weed out most of the crazy mofos. After the week of processing you will enter boot camp with your MP buddies.

On this day they will tell you to pack your bags the day before and you will be sent off. Most likely when you get to boot camp you will have to inventory all your stuff with drill sergants yelling at you and making you do push ups. This day is totally awesome. They will be real hard ass mothers the cuple of weeks. After awhile they will get more lienent but when you least expect it they will get on you butt again. They will show you a fun side also.

I also made a mistake on my last cuple weeks of training. I went to the PX with some battle buddies and bought some CHEW. I came out of the PX with it in my hand and with my cap off. I got chewed out by an officer and he reported me to my drill sergants. This is after people were sneaking in all kinds of CRAP which they drill sergents HATE. I thought he was bluffing but the next morning I was called down to the drill serant office and they asked me if I went to the PX and bought tabaco. I denied it at first. But I knew I couldn't get away with it and hang on to that lie. So then I admitted it and got like 5 counsoling statements (which mean jack sh!t, they go away when you leave boot camp). They tried to get me to tell who was with me and i didn't. I took the blame.

I also did some more dumb stuff but I never got caught so its ok. Just "do the right thing", learn your chain of command, motivate yourself, and ldrship. You will do good.

I doubt it. The Army is already having manpower problems.

Where the hell did I say that only counts for the last 30 years? That statement was for every man and woman who has served in the military, including those in WWI and WWII. Did they not die for our freedom? If we had done nothing would they have not invaded our country? You're kidding if you think they would have left America alone. My dad joined the Army back around 'Nam. I'm considering joining because I feel pride for the country I live in and I am constantly reminded by how everyone takes for granted their freedoms. It's also an opportunity of a lifetime in some respects.

EDIT: some people join for the reasons you stated. There's a large percentage that joined because it's the "right" thing to do.

You're thinking of the Marine Corps.
