Well this sucks, Tigerdirect is no more.

They were one of few sites in Canada to buy computer parts from. NCIX was another good one that's gone too now. Starting to run out of places to buy from. There's Memoryexpress.com and Canadacomputers.com but those ones are smaller so don't tend to have as much selection especially for more oddball stuff.

Not really in the market to build any time soon but just happened to check the site to see if they carry a certain oddball item and saw the notice.

Again? They died years ago, then were bought and resurrected as a pale shell of their former self.

In late-December 2015, the site began holding a clearout sale with no returns accepted; a company spokesperson stated that the site was liquidating its current stock in preparation for its formal transfer to PCM.

Website Re-Launch

TigerDirect re-launched its electronics e-commerce website on February 15, 2016 under PCM Inc. ownership.

^^ I did. I'm typing this on a Gateway laptop I bought from them in 2011 or so. Been one of the better Tech Buys I've made, though with a few ageing machine related issues.

Wasn't aware of all the fraud complaints back then though.

I thought they died too years back but then realized it was only their local retail location and not the web store and I've ordered stuff from there since then.

I've been ordering more from Memoryexpress which is decent, but they have low customer limits making them useless if you need a lot of something like HDDs for a raid array, and less selection of "oddball" stuff (like server rackmount cases for example).

as i posted in this old thread:

i learned not to buy from tigerdirect after they burned me back in 1997 on my first order

i ordered a monitor and desktop with 3 day shipping, and finally got the monitor after 3 weeks

the desktop never came and it took 2 months of battling via calls, emails and a freaking snailmail letter to get the money back. they kept insisting that it was coming despite not having any of that computer in stock. and then they somehow lost the record of my order in their system.

after that i just switched to egghead/newegg and micro center

Yeah issue here we have less choices. There is Newegg.ca though... but I think it still all ships from the US so still has to go through customs. Don't recall if I've ever been dinged or not though. They're the only site that has server related stuff like rackmount cases so sometimes I have no choice.

Years ago, Tiger Direct tried to screw me out of a rebate. Motherboard was advertised very clearly on multiple pages as having a $20 rebate. After purchasing it, I realized the rebate form didn't include the product as advertised. Tiger Direct basically told me: too bad, so sad. On the other hand, I sent all the screenshots to American Express and successfully disputed the $20 that the rebate would have been.

One of my first online purchases was from Tigger. But they screwed up an order and it took forever to get resolved and never used them again. Nevertheless it sucks to have less options.

I ordered from them once or twice. No issues, but they had a pretty bad reputation.

The Tiger Direct near me closed May 2015. Got some great clearance items.
Micro Center and Frys are further up North, but I haven't visited them for about 5 years.

I never had a good experience with TigerDirect so good riddance.

very briefly...what was it, ~2009-2010, when Bing cash was doing its thing, I was getting very good deals with TigerDirect and Bing cash and never had an issue with them. Also, that is the first and only time period that I ever bought anything from them.

For me, my experience was positive (that I can remember)...but it was ordering barebone computers from them that were neither bleeding edge or extremely cheap. Inventory wasn't an issue and shipping expectations were a week minimum back then.

Funny, but the best was when TigerDirect had a catalog of cool computer stuff...just like all the other companies in that space. Sucks to see companies struggle, but desktops are dead.

Tiger Direct was good for me until about 2002, then I went to Newegg. Now it is Micro Center but their products are not the latest.

I think that's a sad reality. Other than the niche fanbase like us most people don't even care about desktops anymore. Going to get harder and harder to build I think. There will be less and less sites to order parts from until they're all gone. If you want a PC you'll be stuck with proprietary non modular prebuilt PCs like Dell, HP etc.

I feel like buying a Dell/HP wouldn't be a bad thing if they have the right case, enough expansion slots on the motherboard, and you can upgrade the power/video card. One thing that Dell/HP do alright is firmware development on their BIOS. I've seen a lot of issues with Intel compatibility and Dell has usually been on it when it comes to those firmware updates... It's not uncommon to see 20-40 BIOS updates to address various issues from processor support and security. You can't always guarantee that level of development support when buying small batch motherboards.

Who knows, maybe they'll start selling more Dell/HP systems with extra expansion slots. That seems to be the biggest issue with them....they go for microATX/miniATX designs aimed at office support and don't give you much expansion. It may be worth looking at Alienware and the others that sell full case designs and aren't aimed at small business/enterprise business solutions.

I think too many people that work won't settle for 1 measly monitor...once you work with dual monitors, working on a laptop makes you feel restricted. There's always going to be a desktop market...gaming systems have just taken a hit the past 10 years since laptops are so powerful and LCD screens no longer have the lag they used to suffer from.

The issue with the OEM route is the base ram, hard drive etc tends to be super low and then they'll charge an arm and a leg to get more space/ram and often you have no choice but to go with them because it's so proprietary. Hard drives not so much, but ram can be iffy. Really depends on model etc as some are less fussy than others, but you won't know until you try it.

Wow this was a blast from the past. I remember picking up a few things from them when they were competing with Newegg, but Newegg just did everything better than them and after a while that's the only place I shopped from.

Now everything is capitulating to Amazon, I wonder how long a lot of e-tailers have left on this earth.
