I have been at my new job for just over a month now and today my boss told me that he is going to need some serious surgery the week after next and will be out for at least a month and even then will probably only be part time for another week or so

So...it's pretty much going to be just me running the show around here and I've only got a week left to learn everything I'll need to know since I am going on our long planned cruise next week.

If nothing goes horribly wrong I should be fine but there are a couple of systems that if they go down I am really screwed as I have no experience with them. (The phone system from 1998 comes to mind among others)

Oh well - If I do well I think my 90 day review will be a breeze!

Locate backup experience who you can call upon. Be prepared for the worst.

Get contact info for consultants they use for phone system, alarm system, printer repair, HVAC and etc etc if it's your problem.

Good luck!

My biggest concern is that this company has not always been the best at backing up custom setups. For example we had an issue with a local cygwin installation that was custom designed by someone who left the company 5 years ago to take data from this $250,000 lab machine and import it into Progress (SQL-92) database and no one thought to backup or document the process

Thanks! I forgot about the alarm system (wasnt responsible for that at my last company)

In my experience, major problems will show up within the first hour on the first day that the other guy's not there.
And it'll turn out that he's got a few ongoing and incomplete projects with completion dates that will occur while he's away.
There'll also be a few technical conversations with customers in progress, and they'll be expecting regular correspondence and help.

Nothing like this has ever happened to me before. :awe:
