I am currently a sophmore at U of Illinois, with plans on applying to the College of Business (MIS) after this semester. I have all the transfer requirements completed so far, with the exception of the 2 courses you can be taking while you apply. I found out my registration date, logged on that day, and of course one of the classes I absolutely have to take in order to apply is full. I called the department of the course, who told me 100's of people have been calling about that class, and there is nothing they can do. There are no equiv. courses, as the College of Business requires that course specifically.....How the hell can a college create a requirement of a class that has so few spots, especially when they know the # of students who apply grows every year??

I really don't think there is much I can do, short of waiting until the semester starts, and hope that someone drops the class and I take their spot (which relies on that spot fitting in my schedule)...this really sucks, and could potentially impede my chances of getting into the major that I have been working towards the past year and half :(

Such is life in college.. I'm sure there are Juniors in your position who need the class even more then you do, and they have seniority. You can try talking to the professor directly but that doesn't always help.

I agree that schools should be aware of which major core classes people need and plan accordingly, but sometimes there just aren't enough teachers or time slots in the world.

Sad that is has to be that way....now I am stuck with the choice to A) go to a different college completely (would really like to stay here though) B) Choose a major I'd rather not do. or C) wait until the next semester to try and get into the class, which would force me to be here an extra semester (provided I even get into the Business school).....ugh :(

They don't care... they're only concerned with extracting as much money out of you as possible.

That happened to me all the time, that's why I ended up taking 21 credit hours my last two semesters of college.

Just hope you have a good place in line.

well that's the thing, if I don't get in this one class, I wont be able to begin the Business Curriculum (have to be part of the major to take the courses), and will be at the school for what, in all honesty, will be no reason (really wish that leaving wasn't the only sensible option I have =/)

edit: and heh, no waiting lines here....it's just a matter of going to the course registration site day after day, hoping for an opening (which i doubt will arise until at least next semester, once people start dropping, if at all)

Waitlist/Holdfile.

There have to be other courses you can take that don't require you to be in the business school. For example, while courses are only open in my major to certain level students or because of prereqs, there are other courses I can take while I wait to satisfy requirements such as filling the Advanced Studies out of your Major Requirement.

yep.. happens all the time.

I ended up emailing professors in the other classes I needed and explained the situation.. most profs are able to sign in students despite university requirements. Worked 2/2 for me.

Well, I was moreso stating that, from my understanding, the process takes 2 years (4 semesters), meaning once i get in, I am at the school for at the very least 2 more years...therefore if I don't get in this upcoming semester, I will be here an extra one at least...which I'd really rather not have to do. And yes, I could complete general education requirements and what not, however my chances of getting into the Business School are right about 50/50 as it is....and staying an extra semester, only to find out that I didn't get in would be horrible.

Probably what I will end up doing...I emailed the director of the college of business, asking if they can suggest anything (perhaps another class, harder even, that would provide the credit I need to apply....I took a stats course in place of the predecessor of the course I am trying to get into (meaning this required one is also a form of stats), so perhaps there is a higher-level stats course that'd work *shrug* If they can't offer me any help, I'll definately go to the professor and see if he can help

UIUC is a great school (came down to UIUC or UMCP for me) and the credits will transfer pretty much anywhere. For your general ed stuff, take courses in a major that you may switch to. That way if you stay and switch majors, you'll already be on your way. If you decide to switch colleges, general ed stuff will transfer over.

That's a good start... but you're probably pissing in the wind with the director. If you have professors that care about their students, they will help you out (in my experience). I even had a math prof offer to tutor me for free every day after class because he knew without his class my first two years of school would have been useless.

If you've got downtime, take some courses in an area that interests you or may have some value (foreign languages for example) and look into getting a minor or a double major.

From what I have begun to see this year, the professors are all pretty caring. I am beating myself up this year for never going and asking for help/advice last year from teachers. This semester was the first time I've ever actually gone in for help for a class (outside of normal school hours), and I went from next to failing to an A in a flash....by that logic, I'd have to agree with you in thinking the prof. of the class I need to get into would help me out.

And yeah, prolly pissing in the wind w/ the Business Director, but I figure I might as well follow the right "chain of events" when trying to get into a class. Prof. is next on the list :p

well, the current plan, as lousy as it may be, is if I don't end up getting into the Business School....probably doing Economics with a CS minor
