Well this sucks. Yesterday (April 17) I was on my bike about to go pick up a customers car to work on it, I am a mechanic. Going down Kerr around 11am and was about to shift to 5th gear so I was dong between 35-40mph. Then this guy in a greed ford SUV pulls out in front of me like I wasn?t there. So I tried to turn and go around but he had about 90% of the road covered. So I hit the front fender area, I THINK, and had a Kung-Fu death grip on my handle bar. My chest hit the handle bars, my chin I THINK hit the hood (or something) and then the next thing I know the bike is on my right leg(more my ankle then anything), I have blood dripping down from my groin on my ass, and I just hurt EVERY WHERE. Then had my pants cut off, neck brace put on, etc? and got a ride in the ambulance. At the hospital had my under wear cut off (and like momma says, always wear a clean pair. I always do) had X-Rays, then they stitched up something between my legs that should NEVER have a 1 ½ inch tear in it Then they gave me some drug for the pain. BUT they gave me way too much. My blood pressure dropped, the alarm went off. I guess they saw, 20 something college guy, he needs a lot. BUT I don?t drink, smoke, or do any drugs. So that was not fun either. But now I am at home and can barely walk and am only taking half doses of the meds they gave me as they also are way to strong.
And of course you know his insurance company will di ck me around on the value of my bike, and drag their feet on med bills and pain and suffering. And there has been a LOT of pain and suffering going on, and I want kids some day dam it. But there is a BIG dent in my gas tank where my groin hit, and my gas tank is strong metal.

A question for anybody that knows. How much value is lost from a wrecked bike that has been fixed. Say the book says $3000 for a bike BUT it had damage to the front that was fixed. What would it be worth?
I know I would not pay full value for a bike that was involved in a wreck. I am afraid that the insurance company will try and fix it.

Don't know about the value of the bike, but if you have PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage, use it (you can get "reimbursed" for it later by the SUV's insurance). It will help with some of the bills. And you might want to call a lawyer.

I take it the SUV was at fault for the accident? Definitely call a lawyer. Their insurance is less likely to dick you around if you have a personal injury lawyer on your side. They might be able to get you a nice settlement out of the deal considering you almost had your testicles ripped from your body. I'm sure any judge and jury would be sympathetic if they heard a story about a guy that received a serious injury to the groin area.

Hey, at least you didn't lose a testicle.

good luck chief, and i hope you have a speedy recovery.

i think the lawyer thing is a good idea... problem #1 will be knowing what sort of future bills you might have.

OMG dude! That really sucks. :Q

That's why I don't like the idea of riding a motorcycle..... Even if you're a good rider, there are other drivers that aren't so good....

I hope you get better quickly. :)

I agree, get a lawyer... and nail them hard. It was obviously their fault. I'm sure this will have implications for the rest of your life.

Man, hope you recover well and soon.

I almost got smashed yesterday riding my Honda. Lady pulls out of the turning lane right in front of me. I was only rolln' about 45mph, and had to lock up the brakes to keep her from plowing into me. Other drivers really don't pay enough attention.

Thanks for the words.

But I live in NewHanover county. We have the LAZIEST lawyers anywhere. This is what happens when you get a lawyer. First they get a offer from the insurance company. They turn it down. They wait, then get the second offer. It does not matter what the second offer is, they accept it. They then take their 20-33% and wipe their hands clean. WHY? Because its not worth their time to go to court for anything under 100,000. My med bills should be around 3-5K depending on what the Doc's say on Tuesday. Average pain and suffering is 2-3 times your med bills. So a lawyer would not even get out of his chair for 20K. My dad got a bad Motorcycle accident, and went throguh this less than a couple of months ago, so worse case I will have him come with me. He is 50+ years old, has a guy like Santa Clause, yet wears leather and rides Harley's/Buell's.

So you would have to get about 1/3 more then they would offer to just break even on what you could get fighting it for yourself.

NewHanover county in NC has the worst drivers. If you move from Pender to NewHanover you insirance will go up anywhere from 20% to 100%. Anybody here from NC. Ever here about NewHanover County ( Wilmington NC ) School UNCW. Just about anybody knows about the rates of insurance in Wilmington and the drivers and bad roads.

Now tell me if this is a kick. I juts called this guys insurance company. I get a message they are closed friday and will not open until monday, then it says goodbye and hangs up. How can you run a insurance company and NOT have a 24hr help desk???? Now I am even more pissed. I am going to lose between 300-700 in work, as I work for myself (Mechanic), in the next 7-14 days :( You better believe they will be paying me for that also. And my Bike is listed at Kelly Blue book at only 2K but the cheapest 1986 Shadow VT700 I can find that is as good or better than mine is around $2900-$3400. I already printed out some ads that show they go for around 3K.
Any other place on line that gives values of Bikes other than KBB.com ??

But drugs are kicking in again, so time for sleep.
Thanks, and drive carefully, your future children are riding on it ;)

Then call a lawyer outside of Hanover county or find one who is rather green and won't dcik around and maybe won't take as much as a cut.

Oh and call your insurance company to get the details on utilizing your PIP coverage, assuming you have it.

you shouldn't be making any decisions under the influence of the pain meds.

i suggest you go to sleep. let your dad talk to a couple of lawyers, maybe talk to them yourself.

Hang in there, dude. Hope you recover 100%

But, do get a personal injury lawyer. Call a referral service for your area. And, most important, you run the show. They work for you. You decide to settle or not and don't take the first offer that comes along. Get the medical a-ok from your doctors and you may need to seek physical therapy for back/neck pain (or even a chiropractor).

A personal injury lawyer can obtain immediate relief for you re:lost wages and covering medical bills.

Hang in there!

Have you ever posted on usenet? Go to rec.motorcycles and post for advice there. It is a pretty funny group with plenty of trolls but there are also some very helpful people who have gone through exactly what you have gone through or have friends that have. Advice from people who actually ride is worth the trouble. You can get a posting account over at Groups.Google.com or just use your providers usenet feed (usually news.{provider_name}.com/.net/.???).

I take the MSF course May 19th so I'm not even out there on a bike yet. Can't wait for it!

I'm telling you buddy... if someone causes me to tear my scrotum, I would sue them for all they are worth. I would not REST until I got what was coming to me. It just isn't right...

Good luck.

I say you rape the SUV driving prick for all you can get. Tack on lost wages, pain and suffering, emotional distress (from almost losing your nuts), etc. If more people get assdrilled for not being more aware of motorcycles, maybe they'll start to pay more attention. I ride myself, and I can't count the times I've almost been creamed by some inattentive mouthbreather in their rolling livingroom. Not through any fault of my own, as I always ride as if everyone else is trying to kill me (which they are if you ride on 2 wheels). They just don't look or just don't care about the person on the bike next to them. Riding has also made me more aware when I drive my car. I see on a daily basis many morons that should not be able to share the same air I breathe, much less the roads I drive (and ride) on.

Hope you heal up quickly, and get what you rightfully deserve. Hang in there.

Sorry to hear what happened... bikers going down is always a sad thing to hear... :(

Some insurance companies will declare a bike totalled for something so small as a slight dent on the frame... that's not from personal experience though... just word of mouth. Hope it works out for you... :)
