This elite unit was purchased New Years Eve. I checked and it was the newest model for heat,etc.... The first night i noticed it froze twice while playing Lego Star Wars. Tonight its done it three times during Forza 2. Since its my 2nd 360 and i'm well within the 15 day return period for Wal Mart where i purchased it, tomorrow i could jump ship to the PS3. I know it hasn't gone totally RROD yet, but from my experience it's coming soon. Oh well...

I bought a 360 2 weeks ago. It has froze several times. It's no longer in my possession. Thanks MS for making my decision easy! (I did beat Halo 3 and Gears of War while I had it ;))

That really sucks. I'm sitting here wondering about all this though, I must have like the luckiest xbox 360.

I bought my 360 off the forums here and modded it straight away with firmware. So far it's only frozen up 2 times in about half a year, and it's survived playing through the recent xbox live bannings.

Do you have yours standing up on its side or laying down? I've heard that if they're standing up it covers on of the main cooling vents on the bottom of the 360. Shortly after hearing that one of my friend's bro's 360 had some freezing issue and possibly the RRoD (Didn't get enough info out of them as they are tech-challenged).

I hear all these problems and am thankful that mine is solid (so far) I've played it 8 hours straight in a few sessions, haul it around to my cousin's house every few weekends and still have yet to have any problems.

Well, the PS3 may be "better", but don't go in with your hopes too high. I've had mine for only one week and it's already frozen 3 times ~about every other day. It may just be the crappy firmware updates, but I've turned off the Info Bar and it still froze once after. Oddly, it can go 6+ hours straight, but usually locks up within half an hour of turning it on.

Weird...aside from the fact that I'm on my third PS3 (I just have bad luck...), I rarely have problems with it. The only game that gave me problems (like freezing) was Warhawk (and CoD 4, which killed my console...but let's not talk about that) but those issues seem to have been ironed out.

My 360 has worked well for the past few months. I was hoping it would die and that MS would replace/fix it with either a more reliable/newer system or just replace the parts with better ones.

My Wal-Mart offers a 90 day warranty and I'd say yours does to. The 15 day thing only applies for PC's, PC hardware, Laptops, Camcorders, Cameras. All because its freezing doesn't mean its headed for a RROD. My first Falcon froze a few times but I blame the disc since it was a rental. But I still returned it just to be safe. Second one hasn't gave no issues yet but of course I am playing mint condition games on it.

Mine used to freeze constantly in certain games which i found to be quite odd. Just recently I got one red light which indicates a bad A/V cable. I checked and the cable was fine, so that means that there is a problem with the scaler chip. So constant screen freezes could be precursor to scaler chip failure (although mine froze for 8 months to a year before I finally got a problem to send it in. It's 2 years old, so i told them that it was the 3 red lights, so we'll see if they fix it or not.

Maybe yours and mine were from the same batch. Mine is a launch 360, and it is used in some manner almost every day - HD-DVDs and games. Never one issue at all.

i've had mine since july '06, and it has froze a few times, as well as doing the whole unreadable disc thing. ONE time i got the RROD...but it was just cause my power cable had ocme loose from me moving it out from the TV when i would play it.

i've had it standing up over 90% of the time i've had it. long-hour sessions have been common as well. as a matter of fact, me and a friend just went from like 10pm till almost 8am STRAIGHT, with no problems at all. we then ate for like 30mins and then played for like 4 more hours. no problems, nada.

everyone is paranoid over nothing. No xbox was made to break on you purposely. MS will fix it, until you're satisfied. If you're that worried about it you should never buy electronics because they all can fail at any moment.

Paranoid?

More like pissed off that they haven't built a reliable game console, and are still having trouble producing one even though they started putting them on shelves over 2 years ago.

I bought mine either late '06 or early '07 and right from the start I was getting error messages when I turned it on, and games froze, and had really long load times. So I sent it back and the one they sent me back isn't any better. This one even scratches disks.

Have them repair it again then.

I'm sick of people bitching about it instead of actually getting it fixed. The squeaky wheel gets the grease remember. You do have to complain to the right area, forums are NOT it. I don't care if yours broke, and the thousands of people who don't have any problems don't care either.

I think that since this is a "Console Gaming" forum this is the perfect place to bring it up....well, until they make a "Broken Console Gaming" forum.... I did get mine "repaired" though it resulted in moving over to the PS3. I figured 2 consoles in a couple of months didn't deserve a third. And, since i lost no money i just exchanged it for the PS3. I'm happy for the people who have wonderful luck with their 360s, i just wish i had been one of them.

All electronics have a chance for some sort of issue. Most of the time it's user error or misuse, misplacement, and not doing proper cleaning of the surrounding area and components that leads to electronic failure. For all other times, just get it fixed.

For the record, I wasn't the one complaining. I have no cause to, I have never owned a 360.

But, I think people are well withing their rights to complain if they choose. Hell, if my PS3 died, I'd probably rant about it.

As for the number of people affected, If the reported ~30% failure rates are anywhere near accurate, then the number is substantial.

You sound like a MS apologist. Sure a product can fail at any time, but acceptable failure rates are under 5% on most items, I'd wager.

I do give MS props for the massive warranty extension. Saved them from a class action suit, no doubt.
