There are countless numbers of small towns in the U.S. that do not have door-to-door delivery.

It's not that big a deal. It really isn't.

and they are reducing that number all the time. They are shutting down our post office soon. So we will ahve to drive 8 miles to get the mail.

speaking of shutting down a post office, they did a change here recently where when you send local mail it actually goes to Toronto and then back. WTF lol. Basically they closed down the sorting centre here.

Same with our newspaper, it gets printed in Toronto now. WTF is going on, where basic stuff can't even be done locally anymore. This costs so many jobs.

Wait, they're cutting thousands of jobs that impact only 10,000 homes? somebody's lying.

Because freight it much less costlier than labor.

If all of the payments made in compliance of the 2006 poison pill bill were returned, the USPS would be flush with cash.

That said, even continuing that stupid requirement, if the USPS could simply raise rates, they would continue being relevant. While FedEx and UPS have taken a lot of business away from the USPS, the USPS still performs quite a bit of delivery-to-door service for FedEx and UPS because it's cheaper for everyone that way.

In essence, the USPS has been screwed over for the last 9 years. It is very important to realize that, because generally the actual details are overlooked and simple "the USPS is bleeding like a sieve" argument is trotted out because it's been heard from someone else who heard it from someone else, ad nauseum.

As I said, the USPS could turn a profit, if it were left to run like a private company. They would need to find new revenue streams as bulk mail is shrinking. The reason the USPS is losing money, is because of the government using it for political reasons.

The argument for the USPS is to give a service at a very low price to help those who could not afford to use other private services. For the sake of argument, I will assume that is true, and purpose the following.

Allow the post office to find a path to going private and get congress to stop fucking around. Once it creates a plan, allow private investment to fund its change. For any service that is not profitable, the government could pay to have the USPS cover any gaps in coverage. The government would also take bids for any company to take over this gap coverage.

Two points I'll add:

(1) Roughly 2 out of every 3 Canadian citizens already do not have door-to-door delivery. link. The negativity in the original post is way overdone.
(2) In the U.S., the postal service is basically a part of the federal government, and as such is a part of the federal budget. This nation is in debt, running up deficits like crazy, paying out a lot in interest. The post office has the primary duty to provide the most revenue for the federal government. The argument that the post office by itself is profitable, therefore it should be allowed to be more wasteful employing unnecessary workers, is not a sound argument. The federal government is in debt, that's the argument, and the post office absolutely should be run in such a way that provides benefit to the federal government above anything else. Same goes for the Canadian postal service.

The post office has nothing to do with our debt nor was it created to benefit the federal government. It is paid for directly by the fees it charges for it's services.

Going to be lovely trying to get those boxes to open in -40 blowing snow after having to jump a snow bank. I feel more bad for the elderly and disabled who will have to deal with this. Not to mention all the jobs lost so the big head honchos can make more money and get bigger bonuses.

NEWS RELEASE

CHARLIE ANGUS
*************************
TIMMINS- Despite making a profit of 194-million dollars last year, Canada Post announced this morning (Wed) that they will be ending door to door delivery of mail in for the postal codes P4N, P4P, and P4R.

These cuts will be impacting around 10,000 addresses and are scheduled to kick in for 2016.

However, Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says the NDP will protect home delivery if elected this fall.

“New Democrats agree that we need a modern postal service, but, in the face of 20 years of profit, there is no justification for these cuts, thousands of jobs lost, or the end of home delivery services. The Harper Conservatives continue to put their ideology over the best interests of every day Canadians.”

The end to door to door delivery in [Timmins] will be a long process likely finalizing in late spring, early summer 2016.

In the meantime, all questions should be directed to Post service line: Post service line: 1-844-454-3009.

“The end to door to door mail delivery will impact some of the most disadvantaged members of our community, the hardest hit being the elderly and disabled. The Conservatives can’t deliver on improving pensions, couldn’t deliver on the health accords, and now they can’t even deliver our mail.”
that's a lot of fud, won't someone think of the poor elderly? Most people are going paperless, less mail, no need for door to door beside the fact a sizable majority already don't have door to door delivery....
