So why do you think the Bible was written in the first place? If you don't believe in God, then someone or some group made it up. Why would they make it up? I have no idea of their exact desires in the whole thing, but I do believe that the only possible reason is to control people through their fear of the unknown (which we've always had). Although, if you look at some of the old Biblical rules, they're not exactly bad. I've mused on the idea of someone creating the whole religion just to help wane out corruption among people.
I know people obviously don't like pointing out movies as a reference, but if you watch The Invention of Lying, the main character does the exact same thing. He realizes how douchy people are since they cannot lie and tries to get people to act better by putting the fear of an unknown being into them.
Is it possible that this did not occur? Sure! But honestly... the pieces do fit that it doesn't seem completely ludicrous.
You do realize that Christianity isn't the only religion, right? And that the Christian/Jewish/Islamic God/Allah is not the only deity that has been or is being worshiped?
Evidence for religion dates back 50-300 thousand years ago, well before any human civilizations, and long enough to predate what we would consider modern Homo sapiens, even evidence suggesting the likelihood that Homo heidelbergensis had a primitive religion, and you're suggesting it was invented to control people through fear as political tool... While many religions can help ease fears, particularly of death, its creation was most certainly out of positive/selfless intentions.
Your example through a movie is absurd. While funny, that movie is complete fiction. While someone at sometime more than likely made up a religion just like that (Scientology for instance), that's certainly not how it happened for all religion, and certainly long before modern or even classical science and math existed to help humans understand the world around them, all of which existed in that movie as it was a modern setting, a time and place just like ours but without lying.
