I originally ordered an Abit KT7A, TBird 1GHz and a Maxtor 7200 40GB drive. I planned on using my existing PC100 memory since I thought it would not effect the FSB of board. However, one of the many things I have learned in this process is that it did and since the multiplier was locked at 7.5 I was stuck with a 750 MHz chip. Other random crashes and lockups caused me to quickly order two sticks of Crucial 256 PC133 SDRAM.
Stuck in here is that I had to reset the CMOS to get it to boot one time and when I did it enabled a setting forcing you to have a fan plugged in to the FAN1 jumper or it would not post...stuuupid. Thanks to the guy that gave me that tip.
I decided, based on that and other feedback here, to return the Abit motherboard and get an Asus A7V133. I also decided just in case it was the HD to get a new HD and send mine back. I got the same model Maxtor drive. So I was all set right? Wrong. I get it put together and have a few more IPF's and kernel32.dll errors.
That brings us to yesterday. I only had a 235w Sparkle PS that had been running pretty much non stop for at least 3 years so I went to Best Buy and bought the Antec 300w (pp303x), an Antec Artic Chill Orb HSF and an Antec PC Card cooler fan. Once I got everything switched out I powered her on and ran Sandra on my Maxtor ATA100 drive and it took a long time, longer than I thought it should have. I left and came back to a blue screen. I felt like taking it and throwing it out my window. First thing I did was change the SDRAM back to 3-3-3 from 2-2-2. I also came to the realization that I had not loaded the Promise IDE drivers so I did that as well. Since then I have had no lockups, BSOD's or page faults so hopefully I am finally done.
Whew! That's a lot of work for a seemingly simple upgrade. Admittedly though, I didn't do as much research as I normally do before I started upgrading...and I paid for it.
Thanks to all who helped me along the way. I gotta another post coming this morning for the tweakers out there as my HD benchmarks and 3dMark scores are lower than they should be.
