OP = Class of '10 Alumnus who is tired of watching his alma mater's team self destruct EVERY season. Oh, and in 5 years of school I attended EVERY SINGLE HOME GAME. Don't you dare call me a fair weather fan.

Well you may be a lifelong die-hard fan, I don't know, but the fact that you happened to use your free/cheap student tickets during 5 of the best years in your football program's history doesn't exactly prove your case. I say this because a lot of people in my state became LSU "fans" in the last 10 years when they rose to become a nationally competitive program, people who weren't fans before, and won't be fans when/if they decline back to a 6-8 win team that finishes in the middle/bottom of the conference.

Maybe I'm ignorant, but it appears to me that Frank Beamer put VT football on the map, and may have done just about as much as is humanly possible to maximize what that university can do in major college football. It's a rural setting, regionally you're competing for recruits against bigger schools and better football conferences, and I'm assuming you have somewhat higher admission standards than the typical state U.

He's come close to winning it all and expectations are just unrealistic. Yes? If you get rid of him, are you really going to get somebody significantly better to come to Blacksburg, someone of a Saban/Meyer caliber?

I apologize for overreacting. I'll still have my ass parked in front of a TV somewhere next weekend for ECU and hopefully the local Alumni Chapter doesn't no show like this past weekend.

Mea culpa. Maxima mea culpa

Wow, the ACC sure does blow this year. I was hoping to see a resurgence of Miami and some other ACC teams. I'm getting sick of the SEC homers.

You didn't overreact, VT has been irrelevant since Michael Vick was QB and they were still in the Big East.

So does this mean Boise State's season is over now since their big first win does not look so big anymore? :hmm:

and what defines a real team?

In college sports, a "real" team is one where the coaches and boosters are able to convince 17/18 year old young men, and/or their parents, that coming to play ball for them is the best choice they will ever have. Who cares if you live in Florida and they're coming over from Cali? They can play football. Your school worked hard to talk that 5-star into choosing you over USC and therefore your team is "real".

Yeah I've become jaded with college sports. The majority of big time games are won before the season even starts. Off the field, In living rooms.

Are you...joking?

Nope, they haven't had an undefeated team since Vick and finally won their first BCS Bowl 2 years ago (1-3 record in the last 10 years). Losing to JMU just punctuates either bad luck or an uncanny ability to choke.

Right, because going undefeated is the measure of relevance in college football.

The Hokies are one of TWO schools to have four straight 10-win seasons. If that isn't relevant, I don't know what is.

makes the boys state pill easier to swallow at least

and yet again, more proof preseason rankings are bullshit, voters are idiots, and fbs needs to move to a divisional system. OOC games are just dumb.

I suppose 10 wins X 4 is good. I just can't remember the last time they had someone as electrifying on offense as Vick.

That's why the BCS system has to go. Say the Colts, Pats, Packers, or the Vikings go 0-2 how many of their fans will write off the season? You'd hear "it's just a slow start, they'll pick it up". A good NFL team is still in the hunt until loss six or so.
With BCS and rankings, one maybe two losses and your done. NCAA needs playoffs.

How can you even compare college seasons to pro? pros play a 16 game season, with only 16 teams in each conference.

Colleges play 10 (maybe 11) game regular season and there are 120 FBS teams.

For the college regular season to be as meaningless as the NFL regular season, each team would have to play about 50-60 games, with half of those against teams already played.

Like Randy Moss says, "But if you don’t understand the business – this is not football. Football leaves you in college and high school. This is a job, man. And if you understand the nature of this job, you’ll understand where I’m coming from."
