Driving down Washington Ave, kid starts to cross the street on his bike and goes in to a grand mal seizure. Stop to block traffic, get him on his side and pin his chin with my thumb. I had to outweigh this guy by 60lbs, and it was all I could do to keep him down while waiting for the paramedics to arrive. I've had my adrenaline rush for the day. Nap time.

<< And you outweighed him by 60lbs? >>

Maul,

I don't know if you've ever dealt with one of these, but they possess some kind of super strength when their in the middle of it. The kid probably weighed only about about 140 and, at it's peak, it took all I had to keep him in place.

Pyonir,

I just happened to be first on the scene. Anybody would have done the same thing. Plenty of people showed up very quickly to help out.

if you come upon a person having a seizure, try to get some kind of cloth into their mouths so they dont chew apart their mouth, and try to get them on their side, or on a soft surface as to not damage their spine while they are thrashing... it is a scary thing to go through....

Pyonir,

There are really only two critical things: Keep them immobilized to try and prevent them from hurting themselves, and keep them from swallowing their tongue, (thus the putting him on his side and pinning his chin open). As it was, he bit his tongue so bad during the seizure that I got blood splattered all over my hands.

It's also a good idea to talk to them in a calm voice, and stroke their head a little bit. Fortunately, there was a lady there helping out to take care of that "gentle" stuff.

Don't want to burst anyone's bubble, BUT

If you come upon a person having a seizure, roll them on their side so if they vomit they won't inhale the emesis & protect their head (put something under their head so they don't get a concussion, then call 911.

DO NOT:

Hold them down, or try to put something in their mouth...

I've actually had to yell @ med students & residents to get them the fvck away from a seizing patient so they don't prolong the seizures. They're pissed for a few seconds & then remember the lecture/chapter that told them not to restrain a seizure patient...

School of thought is that any further stumulis may prolong the seizure activity. I've cared for literally hundreds of folks that have seized and have only had a couple die, usually the seizures stop. In my setting we give Lorazepam IV or IM (a metabolite of Valium) and the seizures stop, then we slap them with about 1 gm of Cerebryx IVPB.

The danger is cerebral anoxia from the continued seizures if the patient goes into status epilepticus (sp?), and there seems to be a little brain damage every time someone seizes.
