My dad got a vaio z laptop in august of last year, so the warranty just ran out. he opted for the 1080p screen, which has been amazing up till now.

it just developed a single vertical black line in the middle of the panel 🙁. looked up replacements, and it's $900 just for the panel...insane. Guess an extended warranty would have come in handy for once.

If it was purchased by a credit card like Visa, Mastercard or Amex, they will extend the manufacture's warranty. You might have to pay out of pocket first and then get reimbursement.
 
i had this on a laptop and HP said it was my fault. did your dad pick it up by the screen, drop something on it or put it into a crowded bag with a lot of other things in there?
 
Three good reasons to avoid Sony:
- Proprietary implementations
- Excessive use of DRM
- Cost of repairs is prohibitive

No, it's basically been sitting on a desk for the last year, lol.
 
when it happened to me HP sent me a photo from the unpacking room with the laptop off and it had some kind of almost invisible mark on the screen. they said too much pressure was put on the screen and this is what caused it. cost my employer $400 to replace. a year or so later the replacement screen started dying.

i'm on a lenovo now for work and bought a MBP for home

I tried to send a private message, rather than revive this VERY OLD thread, but apparently I don't have enough posts to send messages to the administrator group.

I'm curious to know if your father repaired his Vaio Z's screen (2010 era with 1080p display) and what the cause of the problem was (if known). I'm having the same issue of a single black vertical line in the middle of the display.

The laptop is now 5 yrs old so it's had a good run, but if I could fix it for the cost of a display cable, for instance, I would keep it around for a while longer. I opened up the laptop and there does appear to be some wear to the LCD display cable housing in the hinge area, but this might just be cosmetic.

Anyway, it would be interesting to hear what the outcome of your father's case. At this point I'm left with a gamble for which part to try replacing first, so examples of other people's fixes would potentially be useful for informing my first repair attempt.

$60-$80 -- display cable cost if I can even find a cable anywhere.
$100 -- cost of new 1080p LCD, which does NOT come with the cable.
$??? -- inverter (probably not the problem, since the display backlight works fine)
$??? -- traces on the motherboard where the cable connects (not something that is going to be replaced without replacing the motherboard).

Ebay has a screen for a Vaio Z13Z9R/XQ for $103 slow shipped from Hong Kong. It says it is a LED screen so it has no inverter. I never used this vendor so YMMV.

Thanks. I know the displays are available, but I was hoping to get some greater insight into whether it is the display or the cable (not sold with the display) or another issue. I know it is gamble either way (my issue might be from a different cause), but I'm happy to learn from someone else's experience with a very similar sounding issue. It will make for a more educated guess and hopefully less wasted money.

In other words, it would be great to find out what the original poster of this thread found out about the problem.

You could probably pick one up off of flee bay cheap, I would suspect a ribbon cable first. But certainly not a laptop repair guy................

I just wanted to finish my story, in case someone else is in a similar situation with their Vaio Z.

I found a used LCD VGA cable on eBay for under $10 delivered, took the laptop apart, and installed the "new" cable. When I fired-up the laptop... The same black vertical line appeared in the middle of the display. Bummer!

I can conclude that wear to the display cable itself was NOT the problem. Good luck to other folks.
