Porn-Addicted Deputy Resigns

A Washington County sheriff's deputy has resigned after being caught viewing pornographic Web sites on the job.
According to an internal affairs report obtained by The Oregonian, Donald C. Clayton Jr. admitted that looking at the Web sites became a "daily habit" about two months ago.
Clayton, who told sheriff's investigators he thought he had an addiction to pornography, said he viewed porn sites several hours at a time "anyplace there is a computer."
Sheriff Jim Spinden said Wednesday he had planned to fire Clayton for violating the county's electronic information policy, the workplace harassment policy, the performance of duty and professional conduct policies and the sheriff's oath of office.
"I think it's important to know that Don Clayton was capable of doing a good job, but he chose to violate the rules," Spinden said.
Clayton, 45, who resigned Saturday, worked at the information desk in the jail lobby and supervised inmates in the living areas. The deputy had access to a computer three or four days a week.
He had worked for the sheriff's office as a corrections deputy since 1983.
Spinden fired Clayton shortly after an inmate escaped from him outside the Washington County Courthouse on Feb. 15, 2000 because Clayton violated several department security policies.
The inmate had minutes earlier pleaded guilty to multiple rape and sex charges. He was caught the next day and is serving nearly 50 years in prison.
In that incident, Spinden found that Clayton violated department policies by failing to handcuff a prisoner, failing to carry a radio, not checking if the leg brace used to keep prisoners from running was working and not staying alert in court. He also fell asleep while guarding a prisoner during an earlier murder trial.
In November 2000, a labor arbitrator ordered that Spinden rehire Clayton. The arbitrator said the firing was excessive.
