After fighting with Linux to get it to work on my server and failing badly i have narrowed it down to the GPU. Linux just can not handle the AMD 780G(3200) GPU. I tried the following Distros:

Ubuntu 8.04 server, 9.10 desktop
kubuntu 9.10
Mint 6, 7, 8 in main and KDE variants for 6 and 7

All in 32bit and 64bit where available

All crashed within 5 min even with all compiz/desktop/3d effects disabled, thought i had it fixed with restriced drivers but just took longer to crash up to 1-2 hour.

Crashed same way every single time, wierd lines on screen even with server 8.04 command line only so it cant even be a 3d only problem, this is what led me to think GPU hardware support problem. Which was confirmed when i installed the 4830 from GF's comp. Ran like a champ for 24 hours straight running a burn test.

So whats the cheapest Nvidia PCIe card with good linux support. Dont even suggest ATI even though the 4830 ran fine i want to stay FAR AWAY from ati now that i know there linux support doesnt exist. card will be used never for anything just needs to be in the server so it will run and not crash, will use remote desktop for admin tasks. never game on it, only needs dsub output. PSU not a issue have a 550w with 2 6pin. Thanks!

FWIW I'm posting this from a machine running Linux Mint 8, with a 9800GTX and compiz running fine.

lspci lists my card as a GeForce 8500 GT and I've had virtually no problems. But I'm not running compiz.

If it's supported by NVIDIA's drivers then you're not going to have a problem with it. I'm running an 8800GT and it runs perfectly in Linux.

Thats is exactly what i thought about the ATI/AMD 780G/3200, its supported by ATI's drives but apparantly not supported by reality :)

Might go for something with HDMI out as i may use it was a HTPC later. The 8400GS is looking good though, would like somehting passive cooled if possible.

The 8400GS would be an excellent choice for an HTPC:

VP3 added entropy hardware to offload VC-1 bitstream decoding with the G98 GPU (sold as GeForce 8400GS)[4], as well as additional minor enhancements for the MPEG-2 decoding block. The functionality of the H.264-decoding pipeline was left unchanged. In essence, VP3 offers complete hardware-decoding for all 3 video codecs of the Bluray-Disc format: MPEG-2, VC-1, and H264

No issues with my 780G in Ubuntu 9.10.
Also no issues with my Radeon 4670 in Ubuntu 9.10. Took a little fiddling to get the 9.11 catalyst drivers installed correctly, but once done, no problems at all.

honestly, it should just work...might just be a hardware issue in general, either with the motherboard, gpu or even ram since it is shared as video ram. Have you tried running memtest or any other hardware checks?

Ram came out of my main rig and worked fine in it for 12 months. Also ran memtest looped overnight and no problems with it(in new box). Pretty sure its not the ram, has to be the MB or GPU/Northbridge since nothing else is connected to this machine, its got the MB, CPU, RAM and a HDD thats it not even a optical drive, literally nothing else connected.

Ordered a Asus passive cooled 8400GS for $38 lets hope it solves the problem ill have it tommorow.
