Well, screw waiting for the Rebel XT I'm getting the 20D tomorrow!

Looking at the current rebel line, I didn't get the impression that the next rebel is going to be any better construction and quality wise. So I decided that I'll just pony up the extra money for a 20D. I'll like the extra speed and focus points. Another bonus is my cousin has a few EF lenses laying around (Wide-angle, and telephoto) so that'll save me a bit of money for the moment.

😀

The 20D is a capable camera; don't neglect the collection of good glass for it (e.g. avoid any lens under $100 unless it's a 50mm f/1.8). 🙂

I just have the lenses my cousin has, (Probably spent $800 total on it) which should be fine for now 😉

I understand; I don't even own a DSLR (though I've used friends') because I can't afford a good DSLR plus good glass yet - so I get by with a manual-everything film camera. :Q

Still, if those are primes, you're going to be in very good shape, because in general, cheap primes (or, fixed focal length lenses) are going to kill cheap zooms in the image quality dept. Regardless, it's possible to take a great picture with just about anything (heck, even a Holga). To get the most out of cheaper zooms, stop down to f/8 or f/11 for better quality. Also, if you're not shooting action with high shutter speeds, keep your camera affixed to the top of a tripod if at all possible for maximum resolution (I say this as a landscape and macro guy, where the exposures often run close to a second or longer). 🙂

I see him this weekend, then I'll find out exactly what lenses he has.

Be sure to check out http://www.dpreview.com and the forums! I've learned *lots* there and have met a bunch of friendly people!
 for the site. May lurk around and stay if I like it.
DPReview is great for gearheads (hey, I admit, I'm one too), but the S/N ratio for inspirational images is relatively low there. I'm not saying that most of the photographers there suck at photography, but they do suck at editing (that is, knowing which image out of a thousand to post, rather than posting half of the whole damn lot). Plus, the forum layout really stinks compared to this one, though the main part of the site is fine, and I think the reviews are wonderful in technical coverage! Also, check out the Luminous Landscape for reviews that cover more of the practical everyday usage side of things. 🙂

checked out the xt today at bestbuy...its small! i was tempted to open a credit card and get it, but I think its a bit small for my hands. I think I'll be glad when I get the D70 instead in a few months.

congrats, you shoudl have fun with it

speaking of cameras, i was just out shooting the 4x5 and my new lens will be here on Wed, a Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX IF HSM 😀:camera:

Just get a grip extension. Its a must have item for me. Plus it holds extra batteries for more shooting. Can't lose!

Definitely look into getting a 50mm lens. I recently got one to augment my 17-85mm lens and the PQ is phenomenal. Despite my zoom costing 2x as much, the picture quality of the 50mm lens blows it away.

thats beacuse primes > zooms

The 17-40 f4L lens is excellent. I would go with this as a general purpose lens or the f2.8 if you can afford it.

<--Suffering from camera envy.

Really though, aside from the bump in MP, is there *really* that much of a difference between the 300D and the 350D?
