My guess is that the larger cache will have a positive effect on WU times for almost all of the DC projects. I guess only time will tell though. Those 2500+ should be fairly affordable.

It's nearly $600 for the Barton, I don't think too many Ethusiasts or mainstreamers will be getting that chip anytime soon.

We have found out before from the large cache XEONs that 512k L2 cache really helps speed up processing but 1MB L2 cache is the real sweet spot since the entire client would fit into cache.

That's for the 3000+, the 2500+ should be around $200

Accubyte is showing them at $205 for the 2500+, but thier info is a little fishy, shows that it has the old cache size, but does say 333fsb, probably a typo on the cache size. and $629 for the 3000+.
7-10 days before shipping sounds a little fishy too, since the 2500+ isn't supposed to be out for re-sale until mid-march.

I'm due for an upgrade, but I think I'll wait and see about the 2500+, I was planning on a 2600+(333fsb) when my tax return came in.

The Team should have a Raffle. If we can get 60 guy's @ 10 dollars each, have someone hold the money, and have a drawing for the Barton.

TCWO always has competitive CPU pricing and they're a good vendor :)

Do these require a new chipset or will they run on existing boards that spec the ability to run up to a 2600+?

My understanding is they are supposed to run on existing MP motherboards. Question is how long for a bios update to enable that? Is this another paper launch?

Barton 3000+, 2800+, and 2500+ should be shipping on the 21st and the Nforce2 chipset and the KT400 support barton, from AMDZone
A general rule of thumb for Barton is the all nForce 2 and KT400 motherboards will support the new CPU. Upcoming boards based on the VIA KT400A and SiS 746FX will also have support. The older chipsets don't officially support a 333MHz FSB, but it is likely that Barton support that is unofficial will be rolled into many bios files.
HTH :)

ETA on Newegg is 2/14/2003 for the 2500 ($189.00), 2/18/2003 for the 2800($383.00) and the 3000($589.00). Im considering the 2500, but I will have to buy all new parts...

edit: and they have retail versions coming soon as well for a few bucks more.

good find, Accubyte is usually a little on the high side on prices, but have a good selection when newegg is oos of stuff.

I wonder how much the release of the 3000+ will lower the prices of the older chips again, maybe the 2200's will go below $100 like the 2100's did shortly after the 2800 was released.

btw the latest bios for the msi kt400 chipset boards already support barton's :)
good thing I got one already (kt4vl)

I'd probably do more business with TCWO but their here in Florida in Tampa and the 6% sales tax takes the value out of most their stuff for me. Hopefully it will bring down the middle tier AMD CPUs another 7-15% or more?!? *crosses fingers*

I just want to give everyone a heads-up on Accubyte: check their Reseller Rating before you do anything rash! :p

Ok, SETI@Home users. Can you handle this...? Wait, I see someone at the back who doesn't have his bib on yet. :) Ok, here we go, Hexus.co.uk has their own SETI benchmark, and here are some results:

  • AthlonXP 2400+ on nForce2, as a point of reference
    A stock-clocked 2400+ on nForce2 is represented by the NF7-S 2G/133/133 score of 2h42m.
  • AthlonXP 3000+
The overall speed is very good. I'm a little disappointed that the extra cache isn't making staggering improvements, but it's sort of a case of "where do you go from up" when a stock-clocked CPU with completely untweaked RAM settings is in the low 2-hour area.

Thanx Mech! Looks like Barton will be a DC winner anyways, even without overclocking

Accubyte has no reseller ratings in at, but they are listed in the price guides, what gives? does nobody buy from them?
I haven't yet, so I can't say one way or another if they do good business or not.
