Sounds like that author got bullied in school and isn't happy that it continues on the internet.

I will say I agree that people who are assholes (not smartasses, there's a difference) on the internet tend to be that way in person as well. At least that has been my experience. Unless they are scrawny wusses, then they are as nice as can be to your face and talk smack when they are sure you can't pummel them.

However one thing that remains constant is it doesn't matter which type of forum it is, there are large scale arguments that turn ugly.
