Well, I've totally screwed up my access rights on my external drive

ok, here's the deal. I have a USB enclosure with a 40 gig drive. THis morning I was attempting to limit access to it. I stupidly denied access to everyone. I then setup two accounts that had access to it. Both were set with full control. Now, I can't get into it!

I can open the drive and see the folders but when I try and open them I get "access is denied". I also can't change the security settings for the folders. The drive itself is set with me as a user with full rights, and it is set for the subfolder and files to inherit the rights, but obviously it's not. Is there any way to reset this?

Make sure that the account you're using to access the drive also has ownership. I'm assuming you're running XP, otherwise ignore that advice. You'll have to right click on the folder you're trying to access, click the Security tab, and click on the Advanced button. You'll find the Owner tab there. Good luck. :)

On a side not this thread is better suited to the Operating System or General Hardware sections.

Remember that Windows processes file security as "Allow then Deny" meaning....if your user user1 is allowed full control, and it's group, group1 is denied everything (meaning it's listed on the tab, with checks in the "deny" column) then you will be denied access. Be very carefull about the "deny" options. The best option is to normally restrict a single username. If you want an entire group to not hav access, it's best just to remove it from the security tab.
