In reference to this thread I just wanted to pass along an update. I figured it was easier to do it here so as not to have it get lost in the other thread.
Went in and talked to the GM today. I did a lot of what you guys recommended and a suggested a few things my guys suggested. We ended up talking for a good two hours. Apparently I'm the only manager who's actually come in and stood up for his employees. The rest have submitted their lists of who they're willing to let go and been done with this. So we've had our talk, and I must say it was a good one. No whining, no yelling, just facts, ideas, comments. I was totally professional, but I stood my ground. Things ended on a good note (I think) he shook my hand and I went back to work. Before I left he said he liked what I had presented and would talk this over with the owner.
Now all we can do is wait. (*crosses fingers till they hurt*) I think I did perty good presenting the facts and defending my position, but I still felt unprepared going in there. This was all pulled together on very short notice. I sure hope it works. If not, I guess I'll be either having to let people go, or someone will end up with a very well experienced and qualified IT manager.
EDIT: Wow, I knew I presented a lot of good information to our General manager, but not THAT good a bunch of info. He talked to the Owner and they've called off the sudden job slashings and they're going to look at the spending the company does much harder, especially the areas I pointed out, and try to cut there first before considering laying anyone else off. Whew! Well, we dodged a bullet this time around.
Either I'm very luck or they don't want to admit that they tried to take the easy way out. Oh well.
Anyone up for a beer to celebrate?
