Well, I've got my FreeBSD ISO downloading. Anything I should know?

I've played around with it before, but now I'm in between jobs, so I need
something to do!

I'd hate to do this on dial-up.

Any specific questions? Once configured FreeBSD can provide some of the best performance of any x86 operating system.

Slices versus partitions may take a little getting used to. For some reason, I couldn't install FreeBSD 4.2 on a logical partition. I haven't tried again since.

I have never had problems installing FreeBSD. If you allocate an empty part of the disk to FreeBSD and use the default partitioning you should be fine, although I disagree that / should only be ~50 MB.

Is it really THAT small? Heh, I havent installed FreeBSD since 4.2 and that was a quick "lets get this installed so I can go home" type thing for a non-important machine.

:sigh:

I left it dling in windows. I told it to save to F: which has 2.1 GB free.
My C: has 70MB free. It dled the *whole* thing and only actually saved 70MB.

must... not... break... computer....

Ouch... Thats why I purchase the cds... That and I was on dialup till recently 😛

Anyone want to start a freebsd vs openbsd war? I've decided to setup a webserver and mail server on a bsd box. I've been using linux for almost a year now (but not web/mail server). Linux is great and all, but I want these two services on a dedicated bsd box. Which one should I use? Right now, I'm more biased towards openbsd. I hope no one gets flamed because of this, especially me.

That really sucks. I think it happened because IE always downloads everything to the cache first (which was probably on C: ) then copies it to the destination directory. Install GetRight and use that (in case you decide to try again). It'll download directly to the destination directory.

Or of course you could use a real FTP client like LeapFTP (www.leapware.com).

The most broken into servers out there (not in order):

Web
mail
dns
ftp

What kind of security do YOU want on your web/mail server?

:sigh:

Ok, I can't install FreeBSD on an extended partition made by DOS or Linux. Doesn't
that just suck. Maybe some other year....

Yeah, maybe some other year you will read the instructions.

This concept is similar to the way Linux (and DOS) handles logical partitions in an extended partition. You cannot install FreeBSD in an extended partition made by Linux (or DOS).
