Well, I've decided to make some get healthier changes in my life.

Hoo-ray. I figure its time to start workin on my fitness. Seeing as I've worked a desk job for the past 5 years or so, smoke 1.5 to 2 packs a day and live on coffee and have the unfortunate genetic flaw of a family beer belly (Which isnt the result of beer, the guys just have a nice stock for winter time around the belt) its time for me to shape up. My saving grace is I'm 25 and havent got the spare tire yet. So, step 1 is cut down on soda and crap from the grocery store. Thsi is goin well. I now drink 1 pop when I wake up, and maybe 1 cup of coffe during work. Opposed to the 2 or 3 when I woke up, 2 at work, 3 cups of coffee.....
Phase 2: Buy a nice free weight set and get back in shape.
Phase 3: Quit smoking.

Phase 3 is gonna suck.......

Yeah, I'm at the same point you are. Except I'm super SKINNY, so I think it's gonna be tough for me to get in shape. (I want to gain healthy weight from working out.)

Yeah, actually, I think I just smoked my last cigarette. (About twenty minutes ago.) I'm gonna start the patch tomorrow. For me, I think the hardest part will be changing my diet. I like to eat fast food, and crapola like that. From now on, load up on healthy foods.

Anywaysss......best of luck to ya

Don't forget phase 4. Eating a balanced diet 6 days a week. The seventh day is where you just don't worry about eating a few more calories than your body needs. It makes life simpler.

really the only bad thing about coffee is the caffeine. There is only about 15 calories in coffee (from what found when i looked it up a few months ago).

If you can't kick that, at least drink decaf to start with.

I think you should switch around Phase 2 and 3.

I thought about that, but the gasping and out of breath from working out will piss me off, and also after a good workout I dont feel like smoking, so working out will help me quit smoking.

And yeah, eating healthy is on the list as well. Kinda lumped in with working out, just forgot to add it. I seem to always be reading studies and stuff on how certain European places have much healthier people and its due to the diet they eat (Around the Mediterranean). Time to kick the shyte fast food and start eatin healthy. 🙂

  • Too late for this change?

    Probably already permanently damaged.

Gee, that would be too bad.

Shockwave,

I did this a few years ago. You wont be sorry, trust me. Quitting smoking is much easier when you're wheezing from exercise and getting a first hand lesson of the damage it's causing to your lungs.

Just go cold turkey on the caffeine, too.

Doing a weight program is a good idea, but you need cardio. To start, try a run/walk program like this:

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

This program had me in great shape in just nine weeks... and I was a 15 year, 1-3 pack a day smoker who quit just a year or so before that.

Also, if you're going to work out at home (I strongly suggest a gym membership), buy a weight set lets you do most everything you need to do... not just a simple bench.

Something like this:

Or this:

With a set like these, you can do squats, work your lats and do low cable rows. Also, buy a full olympic weight set with a 45lb bar and olympic dumbell bars too.

Also, something like this would be a good idea so you can work your lower back:

Still, a full gym membership would be best.

What are you smoking???

Nothing, anymore 😛

If I could quit cigarettes (the most addictive substance on earth) cold turkey, he can quit caffeine the same way.

It's a three day headache (at most), then he's free. It's not hard.

That's cool. I only suggested he quit because when startying a new exercise program, you don't need to be taking any extreme diuretics like caffeine.

stop smoking earlier. The smoking is probably the most harmful thing you are doing now. At least, cut back to .5-1 pack/day, do the other stuff, then stop entirely.

Sometimes decaf has more caffeine than reguarl...

  1. Gee I don't know... saving your hearing perhaps? 😕

Actually, I don't really give a fvck if these annoying turds go deaf or not. Just betting it's a sacrifice he wouldn't be willing to make for his "health".

*heh* Just cause I have a "loud" stereo doesnt mean I listen to it loud. Silly guy.
Yeah, a gym membership would be nice, but to be honest I seriously dont have the time. Work nights, 3 kids and watch them during the day while the wife is at work. But, if I have a home gym setup I can watch the kids while working out.

I dont really need to lose weight, fortunately I have a metabolism thats on fire. 6'2 and 165 pounds. I just want to tone up and get in a bit better shape.

The caffeine I'm not even mildly worrying about. Used to be quite the powder user. Trust me, caffeince aint got shyte on an 8 ball of good meth. Fortunately those days are long behind me, but for damn sure quitting THAT is a helluva lot harder then quitting soda / coffee!!
