Well, it's official. I'm retarded.

Spent the last 20 minutes trying to tie a bowtie, the closest I've gotten is a sick looking hangman's noose. Sucks because I really want to add bowties to my wardrobe, but clearly I lack the knot tying skills most 8 year old boy scouts have.

After re-reading my post I just realized my son will be 8 next year. I'll just have him fix my bowties for me.

Whew, tragedy averted.

well we didn't want to say anything... :awe:

i tied a tie back in the year 2001 - and that is the only tie i have ever tied. i just loosen it up a little bit to take it off, then reattach it to my neck the next time i need to wear it.

all my bowties have been clipons, i pity the fool who has to tie one.

I'm going to add that and, how to tie a tie to my list of things you should know before you leave home. I haven't worked on it in a while, I think the list is only about 40 items or so.

lol, reminds me of high school. me and a few other guys would try to convince someone they were really retarded.

"you rock man, never met such a high functioning retarded person before"

"no really, I heard your mom to talking to the teacher about how you were born with mild mental retardation"

you'd be surprise how far you can get in a conversation like that if you keep a straight face

I've never tied a bow tie, and I can only remember wearing one once at my brother's wedding. I can tie a regular tie, but it would suit me fine to never have to again. I haven't worn one in 20+ years, and I'd like to keep my winning streak going.

Never tied one; always used clip-ons. I can do a mean windsor with a long tie though.

Can you do the wide knots? I'm good with the windsor knots too, I swear I can do it in my sleep. Perfect dimples and the whole nine. But earlier this summer I tried the wide knot method and realized that I was less than mortal.

tying a bow tie is very easy once you figure it out, I could do it hanging upside down and blind folded. Besides a four-in-hand knot I think tying a tie is actually harder than bow ties, although I can do all classic knots from memory without a problem.

I'm guessing you fail at the last step?

I knew how to tie a long tie back in school (damn uniform) - and have since forgotten that useless skill. I don't really miss it.

I had trouble at first also, and finally went to Nordstrom and had the dude there teach me. Been a cinch ever since. Of course, this was before the interwebs heh

I've never worn a bow tie, but I'm sure I'd be screwed if I had to....I can't even tie a half or full windsor on a long tie. I have no issues with four in hand though, so I usually just use that knot.

Nah, I just have one basic windsor that I learned when I was young, and that's the limit of my capabilities. Fortunately I work at home and don't go to many formal-ish events, so I rarely have to actually tie one. Which is good, because I hate suits and everything that goes with them.

yeah, I was so frustrated when I first tried and couldn't get it to work I tossed the damned thing screaming "OMG WHY IS THIS SO HARD", had a quick smoke, another look on youtube, and a light went off in my head. When I tried again it worked and ever since then it's like riding a bike. I think you just need to get over that initial hump and then it's a cake walk.

Yep. Most people struggle with the 2nd loop and the wrap. Although easy, it DOES take a bit of practice to get it shaped correctly.

Doesn't it suck when your brain can't comprehend simple things like this yet you know you are actually smart?

I don't have the smart problem, but I feel your pain.

I had trouble with getting the 2nd fold inserted properly.

as with most things practice makes perfect, usually I still end up redoing it once or twice to get it juuuust right ;)

So what does ATOT say about full verses half Windsor? I am fully for full Windsor. The half looks crooked and sloppy.

Saw the thread title, then OP and thought finally!

Then realize I misread all the letters after the first and left the thread.
