background-
got my Masters in BME at UCLA after a bachelers from Johns Hopkins...applied for PhD programs but didnt have any luck...got screwed out of just continuing at UCLA because I was misinformed about a deadline.

now I have been accepted to a program in Wollongong, Australia, with a pretty well known scientist. The research, while not exactly what I want to do, it is in a similar field.

I have been putting off telling australia for a while while I waited to hear from McGill in Montreal, out 40 people an open position came down to me and another guy, the other person got it, but the person in charge there has put in contact with people at UPenn, Harvard and Virginia that he thinks might be able to help me.

I also have an interview set up at USC and Michigan.

But Australia needs to know by the end of the week...it would be commiting to a minimum of 3 years there.

One thing that def. makes it harder is that I have never been there, its hard for me to commit to move anywhere without at least a day visit, let alone move to the other side of the world without visiting, although i think it would be awesome

another thing I have to consider, is what a PhD from University of Wollongong will mean when I come back to the US...if I stay in the same field that I do the research it shouldnt be a big deal as the prof. is well known, however if I move back to a focus that as of now I think I am more interested, no one may have heard of him and no one will have heard of the university.

i hate decisions.

I'd stay in the us and re apply for next year if I didn't get anything. Maybe take up a paying job as a lab assistant or something related so my skills don't get wasted.

Australia is supposed to be nice and filled with hot chicks, but I wouldn't commit 3 years unless you plan on working there afterwards.

After you get your degree the rep of your school matters a lot when trying to get your first job.

I just had a long talk about this with my professor on friday, but I'm in a business program so it might be a little different for you.

yeah I plan on having a talk this week with 3 or 4 different people I have worked with.

I have been working as a lab Tech and my application would be much better if i re-apply....I will have to decide after talking to the profs. and the people I have interviews with.

I would love to go if it was a year or 2 or if i wasnt committed for 3 years...but if i go, i cant really come back and drop out of a PhD program, if I did that then no one would want me for a phd
