Well, It finally happened

I finally had a personal hard drive fail on me. While I've had many fail on me at work until today I've only had drives at home that I was suspicious of (unusually loud, slower than usual etc) but never anything that generated errors or failures.

Well - today that streak is over Of course its the mix use WHS OS/data drive which would be the most annoying of my drives to replace but at least its still chugging along (for now *knock on wood*). Hopefully it will last until the replacement arrives *sigh*

No - I was planning on re-working the whole thing this fall. Its in an old desktop I had just laying around with just 2 SATA ports. It doesn't do much so I wasn't too worried. Build a new server now or just replace in kind for the time being? :hmm:

Ah nostalgia. I have some from back then too. It was a little depressing looking up how much I paid for this drive. $30 for a 1TB in 2009. Bought a 2TB drive in 2010 for $50. Now its looking like $70 for a 1.5TB replacement. Yay progress!

It's interesting, every Seagate drive I've ever owned has died - yet I've never had a single Western Digital drive die. :awe:

I got a 30gig kingston way back when that was awesome shit. Its been running fine for several years.

But my 128gig OCZ died in less than a month. Amazon didnt help me, OCZ ignored me. Am never going back. Had to reinstall and reactivate Windows. Not fun.

Just picked up a Crucial M4 cuz its got excellent reviews. The 30gig will be a swap drive from now on.

And yes, all my hard drives gave me plenty of warning they were about to go bad. Only lost my data once, when I was being stupid and ignored the warnings.

I got some special personal files, a lot of it from my father who is now gone.
I cant redownload any of it, so I need a backup. That used to consist of a shitload of Zip disks, then eventually rewritable DVD's, and now thumb drives.

Actually, I could move a lot of it to Picasa and google docs, but again some of it is personal and I dont want it in the public domain, which technically it is if you give it to google.

All the data is backed up so there is no risk there. The biggest annoyance will be the OS

I once had two 750GB drives fail in one day, that prompted me to get a Drobo FS.

I've been OK with Seagates as a brand. But some individual drives have gone bad.

Actually, I think in my entire computing life I've had two hard drives from each brand go bad on me.

With regards to flash drives, I've only had kingston, OCZ and now Crucial. Havent installed or stress-tested the Crucial yet, OCZ went bad in a month, Kingston is still good after a couple years.
Thats not enough data to draw any conclusions.

I've only had a few drives completely die on me, usually they start showing smart errors and I force them out of the raid array and replace before they do die.

I've had only one flash drive die on me though. Before I setup a htpc I used to use a 32GB USB stick to watch movies off of so I worn it out from all the big multi GB copies. I was surprised at how fast they do wear out, actually.
