My previous employer called me back to help out while their staff accountant is on vacation for 2 weeks. I started Wednesday...it felt strange going there after they laid me off a few months ago but everyone welcomed me back with open arms (I even got a few hugs) then today my old Boss, the Controller, asked me if I wouldn't mind helping them out with a big accounting project a couple days a week, after the 2 weeks is up so I said sure! It's a win/win for everyone. I know their systems and I'm familiar with the product and inventory plus I fit in well with the other employees. So I'm a contract employee now...at least for a while.

Sucks that I don't get benefits though. :(

How does that work out with unemployment? More, less, the same?....

Congrats...sort of.

Not as good as a "real job" but still better than sitting at home collecting unemployment...well, sort of.

Not sure yet. The claim is still open so I won't collect while I'm working but it doesn't matter because this job pays way more than unemployment (and I was getting the maximum for that).

That was kind of a poor congrats.

Didn't you make a similar employment thread in the past year?

I did...and my post wasn't meant to be disparaging...just speaking to the nature of the job. He's been temporarily called back to his old place of employment as a contract employee...he didn't get rehired, he didn't get a new job at a new company...the same company that laid him off now needs his help...which, for me, is always ironic.

All of which is why I said
Congrats...sort of.

Are you sure this type of thing is worth it?

I would rather get paid unemployment so I can focus all my time and energy on finding something permanent or enhancing myself.

I know MA has a way to make about a few hundred dollars a month without losing any unemployment benefits, but the moment your part time job makes over the limit, it cuts right into your unemployment.

It's definitely worth it for me personally. Job hunting doesn't take THAT much time and it is pretty easy to continue benefits if things thin out for this company again...which they might. Hopefully not but you never know. When I was laid off they were scared they could even make payroll. It's a good company with a good product and good people, I really hope they do well.
