Last night (this morning at 1:30 AM) I slid into a parked car coming out of a parking lot (street was was declined from the parking lot and very icy). I wasn't going more than 10 km/h, but because it was so cold (-30, -40 w/ wind chill) my bumper has a big crack in it. It didn't look like I caused any dammage to the other car, and I didn't have any pen or cell phone to take down the guys information. I didn't think there was much I could do, so I went home and reported the incident to my insurance company the next morning (today). They told me it would have to be filed as a hit-and-run and that I also have to make a police report.
I went to the police station after making the report and the officers were completely confused and said there was no way they could make a hit-and-run report because there is nothing for them to connect it with. Nobody had made any claims last night or today. They told me to go back to the insurance company and tell them they wouldn't make a report.
I called all of the businesses around where the incident occured asking if anybody had reported anything to them and even went back to check to see if the car was still there (which it wasn't).
At the very least I lose the full discount I currently get ($370/year) and have a premium attached to my licence ($200).
I'm very interested to see how this will turn out.
