Well I'm finally up and running with HD cable and a HTPC

Last Wednesday I switched over from Dishnet to Comcast cable, I managed to get a pretty good deal so I'm saving a few bucks on my channels as well as internet service. Anyway this weekend I finally got around to really just watching a few HD programs and I was floored. The best way to describe it is like looking at a high quality photograph in motion. I'm not a football fan but seeing the detail of the playing field alone made sit through about 30 minutes of a game. Even better was watching the Simpsons in High Definition, I did'nt think cartoons would see much of an improvement but I was wrong. Animation looks so much more crisp.

I was also able to watch a couple of legally obtained backup copies of movies I already own in HD and they were jawdropping. You have'nt seen Lord of the Rings until you've seen it in HD. There also seems to be a growing collection of great movies available in HD, I've heard people talk about The Crow, Underworld, The Matrix, Gangs of New York, Star Trek: Nemesis, Star Wars: AOTC and quite a few others are now floating around the net in HD. I'm patiently waiting until HiDef DVDs will be on sale, there's no going back after seeing the difference.

err, you went from dish network to comcast!!??! i just did the opposite a few months back. i will never ever ever ever ever ever go back to comhack.

I guess this is another reason for me to continue to wait out my upgrade. But then... if I already own a DVD, am I entitled to have a copy of it in HD without paying for it?

What I disliked about Dishnet is that they limit how many PVR devices you can have. Also if I wanted to record in HiDef I would need to spend a thousand bucks and buy my own HD PVR, with comcast I just pay a few bucks a month.

That's what I'm assuming, especially since a lot of movies being broadcast in HD are'nt available at any store.

I haven't taken the time to dig through threads on avsforum, but is there a good HD recording option for PC? When I was looking it seemed the preferred method was Virtual D-VHS (for mac).

Look into D-VHS, HD DVD may be a while.

If you want pre-recorded HD right now D-VHS is the only way to get it.

I wish there were disk based HD recorders, I would love to be able to record my favorite shows on DVD.

I spent a little time on AVS as well and what a lot of people are using the Motorola 6208 (Comcast) to record HD and output it from the firewire port to a PC. From what I've read it's fairly simple, most PCs recognize the Motorola PVR. From there all it takes is a little software tweaking. They key is just making sure Comcast (or your cable provider) brings you a PVR with firewire ports.

I have a 6200 running firmware that should give it active firewire ports, maybe I should setup a PC & find out if it works.

Check out this link there are step by step instructions on how to set everything up. There is even a link where to find the software you need to begin capping.
