One day before I'm all set to move back into the dorms I finally call my roommate. He seems like a good guy, and I start to think "this might not be so bad," even though I applied for a single room. He says he got a new roommate assignment just a few days ago, so I call down to the housing office...

...and it turns out I got transferred to a single room. The dorm I was supposed to be in one the newest one on campus, with AC, carpet, & a bathroom in the room. It's full of Juniors & above (co-ed, no less), and is connected to the Memorial Union. The one I'm going to be in now is all dudes (and no class restrictions), no AC or carpet, and has a suite layout (shared bathroom). Although with this one I'll be connected to my friends' dorm.

I'm glad to be in a single, but I was looking forward to the perks of the nicer dorm. I don't know if this is good or bad...or neither. 😕

see sometimes getting what you ask for is bad!

at least thats what my parents used to say 🙁

This is good... trust me...

AC >>> No AC (BUY AN AC)

If you think its gonna get really hot, ask your parents to buy you an AC unit... if they don't and you can't afford one, get a window fan, most of the months that you are in the dorms are not that hot. Besides at night it's always cooler outside so a window fan will do the job...

This post applies only if your college is not in the desert.... or anywhere it is over 50 degrees in January

Just put up some dark curtains to keep the heat from the sunlight through the windows out and open the windows at night to cool the room down. Leave things off as much as possible like your computer when you leave the room or sleep

Here are the plusses & minuses, as I see 'em:

Pros:

1. I don't have to worry about my Police gear getting tampered with.

2.I'll have a greater freedom for having my weapons with me & in the room.

3.I'll have somewhere to take a lady without having to worry about whether or not my roommate will be there

4. I won't have to be concerned with some douche messing with my computer & other stuff (I'm an only child...I can get a little wary about that sort of thing).

5. I won't have to worry about staying up to late & keeping someone else awake.

6. I can watch TV, play games & music, etc. whenever I want to, again without bothering anybody.

7. Closer to friends.

Cons:

1. I'll possibly have immature, freshman suitemates/wingmates/floormates, who party & whatnot. And as a sworn Police Officer I'll be obligated to arrest/cite them if they do so.

2. I'll have to share the bathroom with up to 4 others, rather than one other (but I shared a community BR with 50+ others the last two years, so what am I bitching about?)

3. No AC.

4. I'll have to bring my crappy rug & chair again.

5. Not Co-ed & not upper-classmen only.

6. Farther away from my classes & the "center" of campus.

I had a double as a single last Spring, after my roommate from the Fall moved out. It was a no-frills dorm like the one I'm going to be in now...living alone was definitely much better. It's true that there isn't too much heat during the school year here in ND, and even this summer has been pretty cool lately, so the AC will likely be a non-issue. I'll have to clean off that filthy window fan now. 😉

Yeah, it'll be just like my first two years. I'm starting to come around & realize why I wanted to live alone in the first place. 😀

Jeebus, don't be an ass and arrest your suitemates lol. Pirvate rooms are always better than ones with a roommate. Be glad you only have to share the bathroom with the room next to you. I've lived in the dorms with a room the size of a closet, 2 guys in there and with a public bathroom that half the floor used. After 2 years I am finally getting an apartment this fall thank god, but hell the dorms were a blast.

I'm hoping they don't give me a reason to arrest them. 😉 How much I like this situation really hinges on how well I get along with my suitemates.
