Well I'll be damned.... didn't think I'd ever see the day.

Linky

I've always said that I refuse to spend any money to purchase crippled, restricted or otherwise DRM'd garbage (napster, itunes/aac, wmv etc). I download everything for free or from allofmp3 and the like. Now the record labels appear to be on the verge of finally offering some music in unrestricted mp3 format. Of course it's not because they came to their senses or they respect their customers, it's simply because they don't want apple to have them by the balls with their itunes store, but still, it's a step forward.

I'm torn between "screw the record labels, after all they've done and continue to do to try and take away my fair use rights" and "hey, this is a step in the right direction, $0.99 for an unrestricted quality MP3 is not bad".

Quality? Let's hope so. They better at least offer VBR. Hopefully they'll come to their senses and use FLAC or some sort.

Better late then never... it was either do somthing like this or cease to exist in any meaningful way before too long.
