Well I think I'm going to get a Wii soon. *Update*

First of all sorry for the long read, I get too wordy all too often.

Well, my birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks, and I think I'm going to aim at getting a Wii. I was thinking about what gaming system I'd want (since I've got just the trusty old N64 right now, well I could play PS2). I've had a 360 (3 different times, sold it each time, just doesn't keep me interested enough). I haven't tried the PS3, but my TV's HDMI port is screwed, and so far it doesn't have enough exclusive content to warrant getting it over a 360. I'll get one eventually, but not now. So I was thinking about which one had games I'd like to play more. On the 360, Burnout Paradise is the only game that really interests me, but after Dominator (which was much worse than 3 or Revenge), I'm not entirely sold on it. I'd probably rent Call of Duty 4, the Orange Box, Bioshock, and Mass Effect, but I just can't think of any game that would really keep me playing it for a long time (I'm not big on online play since none of my friends do), and really barely any that I'd seriously consider buying. Future games don't appeal to me all that much since I'd want to know when they come out exactly, and I wouldn't be surprised of price drops (and the second die shrink this summer).

So that leaves the Wii. First of all, I personally don't like the system much at all. I don't like the controller, I don't like the (IMO) gimmicky motion control, I don't like that its not HD capable, and I just feel that its overpriced, and I don't know that I'd really be interested in it in the long run. However, in the end, it has games that I'd actually want to play. Smash Bros. and Mario Kart (as long as its better multiplayer than Double Dash) are games that my friends and I would play for years (and since they now are going online, when we start to go our separate ways, which has started to happen, we can keep playing together). There's also Mario Party (which we really only played the first one much, so we haven't gotten burned out on it like most people), Warioware, and probably a couple of other multiplayer games. Then there's Mario Galaxy (which sounds like it'd be a lot more fun than Sunshine), Zelda, and Metroid Prime 3 (the latter 2 don't interest me all that much on their own, but I'd definitely play them if I had a Wii). And of course there's the old games, which I originally hated (the way Nintendo is doing it), but I think I'd actually like it now.

So, I've been won over finally. I'll get a 360 again and a PS3 at some point I'm sure, but right now, the Wii is the only thing that really interests me. I'm curious to see how actually owning one will impact my opinion of the system. With the PS3 and 360 coming down in price (possibly to Wii levels, or close before next year), I don't think I'll feel too bad if the Wii drops as well, as getting enjoyment out of it will outweigh the difference in cost. I'm not sure I would even be bothered by Nintendo coming out with a system that compared to the 360 and PS3 in graphics power (which I actually would want, but would be a little bothered about buying a Wii).

Now my only issue is to figure out if I want to have my mom snag me one (since they're still reasonably rare, and she would be able to hold it for me with the bonus of getting it slightly below MSRP due to her discount), or try to get a used one.

what's the harm in getting it if you don't have to pay MSRP or more? worst case scenario, you sell it like the others. The problem is.. will SSBB and Kart get delayed... even more.. heh. Then by the time you decide you want to sell it, maybe MS will have updated the 360 one more time (not likely soon... I know.. I'm waiting for that, and a price drop), and you can get it again.

You'll be sorely disappointed when you go to play online games with your friends and you find that you have to mess with friend codes and that there isn't any voice chat at all. In this day and age of multiplayer gaming, if you don't have voice chat, you might as well be playing against against random people. Simply put, if you think online gaming is going to make you keep the Wii, think otherwise.

Based on all your other comments, sounds you have more complaints than reasons to get one. Save your money and buy something else.

I do, but they aren't games that I get a lot of playing out of. Online in FPSes is fun for a little while, but gets old to me pretty quickly. I very much prefer playing games with friends (and later one when we don't live close enough to just go over to someone's house, the internet capabilities of the 360/PS3 will be a lot better, but for now they don't do much). That and most of my friends aren't willing to put down $300 on a game system.

I like a lot of the newer games, they just aren't games that I get $60 of value out of. Gears of War is one of the few that I actually feel like playing through more than once (but it was about the same as others online, where it was fun but wouldn't hold up for me over time). The first Halo was the same way, which is why I liked it. Even though it was fairly short, and yes you did cover a lot of the same areas over again, the good parts were enough to make me feel like playing it again.

Cue *my wii collects dust* posts.

Incidentally, that is the reason I've gotten rid of my 360 each time. I'll play a couple of games for a couple of months, and then just be bored of them and there isn't anything coming out soon that would keep me too interested, so I sell it and wait for there to be at least two that I'll get a good amount of playtime on. I hate that there are so few games on the 360 that you can play more than 2 player on a single system. Everytime we'd play games, we end up playing the N64.

I do agree with people, and up to this point I think it has been mostly true of the Wii. Until Smash Bros. comes out, I can't think of a single game that I'd get years worth of play time out of.

You've bought 3 different 360s and sold each one because it didn't interest you... do you put much thought into your purchases? 😕

The friend codes wouldn't be an issue (yes its a hassle, but not a huge one), and while the lack of voice chat would suck, its not like we couldn't use some other method (we'd probably call or text trash talk to each other). If I'm not playing with people I know, I don't really even use voice chat. I have no delusions that the Wii's online gaming is anything more than basic at best (and terrible if the games have performance issues online). Plus, it'll be another year or two before we're spread out enough that we can't get a few people on a single system, so it'll just be something to tide us over later on.

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised to find that I hate the Wii even more than I do now after actually owning one, so I'm going in with pretty low expectations.

You're simplifying what I said. I buy it because there's at least a couple of games that I will play for a solid couple of months, and then sell it after I get bored of them. Considering I've lost money on only one of the 360s that I bought, it has not been an issue. I won't be playing it much, if at all in the interim between owning them (and couple that with price drops), it ends up being cheaper in the long run for me (where I can put the money to better use, and then spend less money later on). I know it doesn't make much sense to most people, but it works great for me.

For this reason, I'm not too concerned if I don't like the Wii, as I'll just be able to sell it and buy something else that I get as much or more enjoyment out of (not just video games).

I buy and sell things as my interest in them wanes, so that I can spend that toward something else that will keep my overall enjoyment at roughly the same level. Whats the point of holding onto it if its going to be 6 months to a year before you get any more good use out of it, and can spend less money on it later on, but in the meantime you can put the money towards something you'll get more enjoyment out of? That's my own personal way of doing things. If there is something that I'll get continuous good use/enjoyment out of then I'll keep it, but otherwise I don't see a reason to.

Sounds like you might actually want a more fulfilling hobby?

Hope the Wii ends up being fun for you. I'll get one, maybe, one day. No rush.

Honestly my Wii would be collecting dust if it weren't for GH3. Even that is getting old though because I'm not sure if I'll get any better and the last few songs were hell on hard so I doubt I'll even get close on expert. Other games I have are Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Super Mario Galaxy, and Mario Strikers Charged. They are all good games. SMG was hella fun. None of them have lasting appeal to me though.

With my GH3 addiction wearing thin, I'm hoping Rock Band for the Wii will turn out to be good because that would probably hold my interest in the Wii for a long time. It that game flops, I could see myself going for a 360.

Yeah, but they make these incredible things that allow you to talk to several other people at once, even if you're not playing a game with them! It's called a telephone.

You could also try headsetting with ventrillo. That'd be just as good. I can understand the frustration if you don't have a wireless headset though.

Put simply: buy World of Warcraft for your PC... and have your friends do the same thing. If you've sold 3 xbox 360s already, you definitely need something more addicting than a console. I would generally prescribe Warhawk or CoD4; however, for you we need to bring out the big guns.

If you are just looking for ways to keep yourself occupied in concert with spending money: rent more movies, sample fine boxed wines, or hell get a gym membership (you'd be surprised how addicting going to the gym gets!). You can bring your friends and talk shit during any/all of them! For peak efficiency, go to gym, work out for a decent period of time, follow up with liquid diet consisting of fine boxed wine while you watch your feature movie.... then call in sick the next morning before repeating the cycle... hey it got me through college...

What a pointless thread...
You remind me of my friend who scrutinized over and over again if it made sense for her to spend lousy couple of hundred on game console and then went and bought on impulse a lavish cruise vacation that screwed her credit for years.

i'd slap your mother if you tried to include me in a conference call while playing a game.

I'd say that the bottom line here is that if you feel you will have a lot of fun even with the few games that you want to play then purchasing the Wii will be worth it in the long run. The titles you mentioned are all really good. I have only played some of the titles you mentioned but I can say that out those titles I have gotten my money's worth. The only thing you mentioned which might turn you off would be the controller interface but don't let your first impressions bog you down about it. Draw your conclusions after you get used to using them. If you are an old school gamer like me and love to play the wii versions of the classics then that will be enough to keep you interested.

Well, I finally got it yesterday, my Mom was able to pick one up (they got 12 in where she works). She said there were maybe 3 left when she went home that evening. She also told me that my high school science teacher (he taught chemistry, physics, some computer classes, and if you met him he's the walking epitome of a nerd, but he's also a fun teacher, oh and his wife is the network/computer person for the school as well as the librarian) bought one, which I thought was kinda cool.

Anyway, I have to say, I like it (not love it though, but also don't hate it either). Only have Wii Sports, and picked up Smash Bros. Melee so we could get some practice before Brawl. Hardly anywhere here carries gamecube controllers anymore, and if they do they're the cheap crappy third party ones (such as the Gamestop branded ones) and wanted $20 for them. One place had two Nintendo brand wired ones, but wanted $25. I passed for now, as I'm hoping to snag some used ones for less (and maybe a Wavebird or two). I ended up finding to of those crappy third party ones for $5 each used. Then I remembered I needed a Gamecube memory card, and so that was another $15. I also paid I think a little too much for Melee, it was $25 new at the only place that had one, although I have a feeling that would've been better than getting it used at Gamestop who wanted $40 for any used Nintendo made games.

Had some fun with Wii Sports. It'll be fun to put in every now and then, but definitely isn't worthy of buying the system for. I kinda realized that I was being hypocritical before, when I said how stupid it was to do the full motion for the sports stuff (I still don't, but I do at least do more than just flick my wrist, which makes it more fun), as I defended people who said people playing Guitar Hero are stupid (because they act like they're playing a real guitar). We even got some chuckles out of the Weather and News channels, but we all kinda agreed that we have no idea why Nintendo even bothered doing either of those (especially since the weather report was a good 12 hours behind in its reporting). I hope they start to put a lot more titles on the Virtual console. We'd love to have NBA Jam and several others that I forget.

I'll get around to playing Zelda, Metroid, and Mario sometime, but I don't feel like putting down the money for them right now (not really in the mood to play them mostly). Obviously Smash Bros. is gonna be getting most of the play time anyways, and with Mariokart not far behind, I think it'll get plenty of use. I also want to pick up a second Wii controller and a couple of gun attachments so we can play House of the Dead 2&3 and the Resident Evil rail shooter. I'll also look into Rockband/Guitar Hero at some point.

The last thing I have to say is I don't know if its the crappy controllers or what, but Melee feels really twitchy and much faster than I remember it being. Of course we've played the original Smash Bros. so much since I got rid of my Gamecube that its probably just going to take time to get used to it.

Two weeks to practice. Get to it!

Going from the original Smash to Melee is obviously a big change, as original Smash is so much slower. I'm sure going from Melee to Brawl will be a decent change as well, so it probably isn't to pertinent to get good at Melee.

Hope you enjoy your new system. Brawl is sure to be a big hit.
