Well, I soldered a molex plug on a 15-year-old fan, and it works (pic)

Some of you may remember my post about my recent acquisition of a discarded IBM 5363 server. Well, I managed to get the thing completely gutted, and among the parts contained within, I found a somewhat dirty Papst 4124GX fan.

Mind you, I've never used a soldering gun in my life until now, but I cut off the fan's plug, grabbed a spare molex connector, soldered it together and plugged it into an external hard drive housing. I was a bit suprised to find that this fan, despite being as old as the berlin wall, worked perfectly!

That is all.

Sadly, there's no way a modern fan will work in 15 years. Those old computers were built to last.

7V on a 12V fan is 58%. Only 8% higher than what he's done.

There's a chance a creaky old fan might just sit and hum from a dead start, at half it's required voltage.

Thanks Electrode, btw, does it sound like she has life left in her, or is she only turning because of the lower voltage?

"she" doesn't sound like anything. It's dead silent. :)

From what I've seen of it, I don't see why it wouldn't last another decade.

And it was around until 1989. Since the fan was made in 1988, it is, in some way, as old as the berlin wall.

No, it was around AT THE TIME the Berlin wall existed. The was was 28 years old.

*Thinks*

Eh, whatever, I guess you could say it that way too :p

I have a temperature sensor I got from Radio Shack that has been running on the same AAA battery for 4 years!
