Yet again, I was reading about leasing vs. buying (why can't I just stop myself?). Anyway, I decided to do a search for "lease buy car" in the archived messages.
THIS WAS A MISTAKE.
This topic must've been discussed ten jabillion times here on ATOT in the past few years. But for some stupid reason, I ended up reading through most of the results (yeah, and it's 3 AM, too).
This was a waste of my time, because every single thread said the same thing, here it is in summary form:
OP: I want to lease a car because it's cheaper!
Poster1: No, don't do that leasing's ghey, you have nothing to show for it!
Poster2: Look at the residual patterns!
Poster3: It really all depends on how long you want to keep it.
Poster4: I actually love leasing, it gets me more car for the money!
Poster5: It's only good for businesses!
Poster6: Why the fvck would people waste money buying a new car every three years?
OP: Yeah, but if I'm going to get a new car in a few years anyway, shouldn't I just lease?
After that point people just ignore what the OP says and ramble about money and saving and interest rates.
Times that by 1000 and that's what I was reading.
It seems the leasing/buying arguement will never be settled. There will ALWAYS be people who will ask which is better. There will ALWAYS be people who say it sucks, and others who say it rocks. So this is quite possibly the worst place to ask what you should do. I think you're better off asking a monkey, or maybe a barrel.
The reason I look into this so much MYSELF is because I can't help but research things that I don't have definitive answers for. I don't have tons of money flying around so I need to think economically. I drive a 92 Sable and intend to until it splits at the seams while I'm driving it. But whenever that time comes to get a another car, be it later this year, summer of 06, two years from now, whenever, I imagine I would attempt to follow the general advice of those here, which is BUY and never LEASE. But I can't help but drool at advertised lease payments of something like $112/month for a Cobalt with less than a grand down.
Of course in the end, I'll probably buy when the day comes because I don't want to "learn the hard way" why leasing sucks like so many people here have. I guess it's just really hard to ignore those low lease offers you see on TV when you HAVE to get a car and can't afford much per month.
Oh, and don't ever search archived messages on a topic and read all the results.
Thank you, and goodnight. It's 3:15 now.
