Here we go--
I was having issues with clockgen not allowing me to adjust VID/FID.
I traced the problem back a bit...
and decided that it was probably the dual-core hotfix.

So, I uninstalled the hotfix.
Bad idea.

System will NOT boot to windows now.
Just posts... verifies DMI... backs up the CMOS (like it does every time..)
and bam..
Restarts.
Not sure what to do. Suggestions?
 
have you tried booting into Safe Mode with Networking, then either downloading the hotfix again, or using the System Restore Wizard?
 
Can't get to safemode.
Posts, but right before the Windows Logo appears, it restarts.

I've got my windows CD.
I'm going to try repairing the install.
Any other suggestions are more than welcome.
 
It's a little tedious, but it works. Ignore the first part of this KB article, as it deals with error messages you're not getting. What you're interested in is utilizing System Restore via some changes you make from the Recovery Console. So, you really want to do is do parts 1-4.

I would use the "batch" option that they talk about to save time and prevent bad keystrokes.

When I try to start in safe mode, it'll start loading the files (like it normally does) then restart.

On the bright side, I left a 10GB partition sitting unformatted for a rainy day.

And, luck me, I seperated my windows folder from main programs.
(I have a few key apps on the windows folder, but the large files are all on the bigger partition.)

I'm going to install windows on the other partition for the sake of being able to boot to windows, and see if I can fix anything.

Sound like a good idea?

That really won't get you anything that you couldn't get from booting from the XP Install CD and using the offered Recovery Console. Or booting from a BartPE CD.
 
If you uninstalled the hotfix, without removing the registry entry, that could be why you are no longer able to boot. You could have just disabled the hotfix via the registry entry. If you didn't disable automatic restarts you could be getting a BSOD that you just can't see. What are your system specs by the way?
 
That's what I was so curious over. No idea HOW it happened.

Uninstalled the hotfix, and it told me to restart--unfortunately, it also disabled ALL of my USB devices (told me this while uninstalling the hotfix), so, after it was uninstalled, I powered it off via the button on the mobo.

Turn it on and, woops, no start.

Also.

Opteron 165 (Stock, for now.)
OCZ EL Plat. Rev 2
Maxtor 16MB Cache/300GB HDD
DFI-UD motherboard.

Also, is there any way to modify the registry from a different installation of windows?
(Same HDD, different partiton)

Also, I did part 1, and couldn't do part 2 because it kept restarting (still)
Now, however, when booting into safe mode it hangs on 'TDI.SYS'.
Googling it now..

Apparently I can access it from reg.exe
Looking s'more.

Edit:

No idea how to edit the registry with JUST the files in the system32\config folder.

Any ideas?

Nope. Idea failed. I'm thinking I'm going to have to reformat. =/ (Any idea on how I can keep all my current settings/lists/etc?)
I've got my partitions set up like:
C: Windows\Critical Apps
D: Program Files/Heavy Data/Downloads/etc.

Is there anything I can do so that my Start->All Programs will list everything where it is? So my desktop will appear as it was?

Or am I screwed? 🙁

Not that it will help, but that's likely where you went wrong. I suspect during a proper windows shutdown the uninstall routine was going to copy a few files back and perhaps set the "run once" registry key to perform some magic at reboot. You should have connected up a PS2 mouse so you could do a proper shutdown. 🙁
 
Just reformatted--wasn't worth investing the time into it, I had most of my stuff on a different partition, anyway.

I've "broken" windows plenty of time... but that's why I keep all my files on another HD!!!
