i've finally found a job. i graduate from college w/ a BS in MIS. i've been looking for work in the field to no avail, so i just accepted an offer at a small automotive supplier company. i'll be working as an account manager, supplying to several tier one companies.

i've got mixed emotions. it'll be my first "real" job w/ a real paycheck, so i'm excited. however, i really feel like i've "given up" the search for a job in the IT industry. i tell myself that i'll keep looking for a job in my field of study (that should pay more than i'll be getting now). one positive note is that most people who have worked for the company have gone on to larger companies (mostly automotive). regardless, i don't want to sound ungrateful, so please don't think i am.

so yeah, hooray for me :D

anyone else have some words of advice for someone in my position?

I work in account management over HP's PNB business. It's challenging learning the business (we use JD Edwards as our system for order processing --> WMS) but after that, it's a lot of busy work. At least where I'm at now.

And I doubt that a job in your field of study will pay more than what you're getting now, dependant on what you want to do with your MIS degree. Programming? Should have done CS. Actual IT? Without certs or someone who can get you in the door, you're SOL.

Congrats! And don't spend that first paycheck all in one place:)

Good move IMO, as they say it's always easier to find a job when you have a job.
Many times a history of proven dependablity and good job references mean more than a degree. Work hard and always keep your eyes open for opportunities and I have no doubt you will one day land the position your looking for in the IT industry

You?re not missing out, the I.T industry sucks for good paying jobs. Working in the Financial Business domain, is where the money is to be made.

Congrats. Few people find their dream job on the first attempt. Take the job seriously, but continue to look around.

Management Information System.

Some confusions between MIS and IT

In business, information systems support not only business processes and operations, but also decision-making and competitive strategies, which are the fields of MIS.

As an area of study, MIS is sometimes referred to, in a restrictive sense, as information technology management. The study of information systems is usually a commerce and business administration discipline. It involves frequently software engineering, but also distinguishes itself by concentrating on the integration of computer systems with the aims of the organization.

The area of study should not be confused with computer science which is more theoretical in nature and deals mainly with software creation, and not with computer engineering, which focuses more on the design of computer hardware. IT service management is a practitioner-focused discipline centering on the same general domain.

That should all be listed in the offer letter . . .

Here are some tips:

Keep your mouth shut and your ears open.

Don't brown nose the boss.

Don't hit on anyone, someone else is probably tapping it anyway.

Work hard, get in earlier than the boss and stay later, at least for a year or so. Even if you're not doing anything constructive. (it helps if you do though)

You'd be surprised at how you can excel over your peers just by always doing what is expected of you.

your first week with a job?

try not to have a spaz attack when you see how much they deduct out of your pay.

Edit: and jemcam's comments above are wise, take them to heart!

My rule of thumb has always been to expect about 1/3 of your gross to go towards taxes, benefits, etc. It will be more if you contribute to a 401k or other retirement account.

lol, within a few weeks of my job, i interviewed and landed a job in a global IT support company!

it's a night shift job, but that works perfectly with my schedule. the pay's a little better than what i'm getting now, but i would have switched even if it was the same! i'm real excited to start working and it seems to be a decent company. pretty big with plenty of lateral movement opportunities within the company, if i want.
