Well, I finally got back with my Harley

i just bought a 1993 Sportster 883 from a guy in idaho...got a killer deal on it, and the bike is sweet 🙂 pictures coming later today, i gotta go get it tagged and insured in a couple of hours, the bike is badass, it's got chrome skulls all over it, custom tank, windshield, saddlebags, modified king and queen seat and also a solo seat with fenderpad that looks bad to the bone on it, top end of the engine was rebuilt about 2K miles ago, front end was rebuilt about 3K ago, it cold started right up in 30 degree weather with just a mere flick of the starter 🙂

we drove all the way from oklahoma to go get it...covered 3000 miles in a little over 48 hours, i just woke up after sleeping for a long time 😀

it's driving me crazy that i can't ride it yet...i put about 10 miles on it in idaho before i took posession of it...even though i was freezing my balls off and shivering, i still didn't want to get off of it

my first harley...this is better than losing my virginity 😉 😛

I don't think that I could even fit on a sportser. I think that my legs are two long.

OP, how tall are you? How much to you weigh?

Sportsters have a higher seat height than the Dynas, baggers and Softails. If anything, people with short legs have a harder time on them.

Sportster 883 seat height: 29.3

Fatboy seat height: 27.5 in.

Wide Glide seat height. 28.5 in.

In fact, the Sportster is the WORST Harley to get for a woman or anyone of short stature. It's more top heavy and the seat height is much higher.

Not true what you arnt accounting for is WIDTH... seat height is only part of the problem..

val cant touch flat footed on any of those other harleys but she can on her 883...
becasue its narrower that allows her short legs to reach.

the other harleys she can barley touch on but are too heavy for her to lift off the kickstand.

Don't women typically have longer legs than a man of equal height?

Would have been awesome if you could have driven it home from Idaho 🙂
Did you pick up potatoes and frysauce while you were there?

I've never meet a woman who fits better on a standard Sportster than on a Softail or Dyna Low. With a minor seat modification ANY Softail will fit a woman far better than a Sportster. And the low center of gravity makes a Softail far easier to get off the kickstand than a Sportster.

Also, the New Softail Deluxe has the lowest seat height of any Harly at 24.5 Inches. Add to that the pull back risers and it's far more comfortable than any Sportster for a woman.

Sportsters have a very high center of gravity, feel heavier off the kickstand, and are harder to handle for short people.

I dare say the bulk of the problem for your lady is mere intimidation. And I think you may be omitting the fact that she either has an 883 low, or an aftermarket lowered 883.

Finally, my GF has a hard time with any standard Sportster, yet fits on a Softail with ease with a minor seat modification. She fits on the Softail Deluxe with no mods at all.

yes we had to lower it with adjustable shocks... she is just too short...
she is 5'1 and 100 lbs...
very tough to find any bike she can ride at stock height/width she has no problem with the weight of this bike.. but when we take her to the dealer to look at other bikes she cant lift any of them without help.
she wants a bigger bike but we having a hard time finding one she can fit on..

Agreed, we used to call them "secretary bikes". I always felt like I was on a bicycle when I sat on a sporty, they were just so narrow.

Oh, I had a 1993 FLSTF Fat Boy and a 1989 FLHS Electra Glide Sport. The FLHS was a much better bike with the air ride suspension and rubber mounted motor. Not to mention the locking fiberglass bags. I had it decked out to look like a Road King, you couldn't tell the difference and it cost 1/2 as much as a Road King. On top of that, I had it dynoed once at Bike Week and it was putting out 90 HP. I didn't really do that much, new pipes, carb and air cleaner work, single fire ignition, etc. That was a really nice bike.

Too bad my friend got killed on it shortly after I sold it to him, I've never gotten on a bike since going to that funeral. It wasn't his fault, drunk driver turned left in front of him and there wasn't a thing he could do. The paramedics said he was dead before he hit the pavement.

I love my XL too. Just took it out for the first time this past weekend. It was really cold (~35F with 20mph winds) but it was definately worth it.

Thinking about selling my Sporty to get a mid-late 90s softtail for this summer. It sucks trying to carry gear out to Sturgis in the summer on a Sporty and I really want a bike with apes on it. 😀
