Well I feel stupid

I've been running Vista on my Inspiron 700m since release. I always thought it was an acceptable level of performance for what I do with the laptop, mostly web browsing and remote administration. Never really taxed the system. Only complaint I had was that flash videos would stutter occasionally, which I blamed on Flash. I mean, it's pretty logical to blame Adobe if you have problems with an Adobe technology, right? 😉

Last night, I tried to install the Joost beta though and it said my processor was only running at 800MHz. I have a 1.6GHz Pentium M. Take a look at system info and it reports 1.6GHz, as expected. Run the beta install again, same 800MHz. Take a look at my power plan's advanced settings....power saver is set to run the processor at a MAX of 50%, even when on AC Power! Jesus, I've been running this damn thing at half speed for months. Needless to say, my Vista experience is much improved and I feel like a royal dumbass.

Anyways, just thought I'd let anyone else with a laptop with Vista know they shouldn't trust system info and should check the advanced settings of their power plan to make sure that they are getting full performance when their laptop is plugged in!

Anyways, it's nice information to know. It's not really surprising, though, when considering that the default power saving features on a clean install of Vista on a desktop is ridiculous. Default to turn hard drives off after 20 minutes of being AFK? Please. Yours makes a little more sense for power conservation if it were on a battery, but, of course, makes no sense when plugged in.

Maybe in the future MS will walk people through a more thorough configuration process since lots of people probably don't know how to change the power settings and they don't seem to know what they're doing with the defaults.

Well, unless you have the manufacturer of the laptop to blame, that is.

Not sure I follow, are you saying this is too agressive or not agressive enough?
