Im stepping up my 7950gt 256 to an 8800gts 320 sc using egas program.
Of course now I have read about the 8900gs 512 that will be $50 cheaper so I feel I should have waited, but I could wait forever. I game at 1440x900 so the 8800gts 320 should do well for me overall.

Just mailed off my 7950gt. Very nervous now. First time using step up.

That's the problem with PC upgrades. Always new stuff on the horizon, but if you always want to wait for the next big thing in your book then you might never buy anything. One of my friend has done that a few years ago, and I convinced him last year to go with a new rig after three years of waiting "for the next stuff that's coming soon".

The 8900GS might turn out to be better, but hell ... you had to do something, right ?

I myself want to upgrade sometime in April, and I will probably go with a C2D even though I know that Barcelona will arrive just three or four months later. And then what, if I want for AMD's K8L but then hear about yet something new coming from Intel ? Will it ever end ?

8900gs is the nvidia refresh. You wont see that card for months. First we have to see the 8600 series. Then we will see the 8900gtx and gts. Then after all that you'll start seeing the lower end 8900 cards. At 1446x900 that card will be just fine.

Materialism will never satisfy our wants. Be glad that you have a GPU that's better than proably more than 95% of ppl out there, and give yourself an execuse not to upgrade to that expensive 24"+ LCD

It should handle 1440x900 no problem. It's just the higher resolutions with AA you have to worry about.

i'm sure this has been discussed previously, but how is evga's step-up program?

would anyone here that's taken advantage of it share their experience? i'm gonna order the GTS640mb, and this program may sway me to go evga (possible step-up to 8900 this summer if the program is worth it).

thanks!

well I havent got mine back yet, but I will tell you. I submitted my request, picked the 8800gts 320 even though it said it was backordered. Within hours they approved my step up. I emailed a copy of my invoice. a couple of days later they ask for payment. I gave them payment. a day later they verified payment and sent me an rma to ship my card to them.

Now I have have to pay shipping for my card to them, and for the card from them, but other than that I get their msrp card - what I paid retail + shipping = new price. So I paid $200 for my card, the new card is 299 so I ow $99 plus shipping. I sent my card in today so it will get there early next week at which point they will verify that my card and all its parts are intact and then 3 day ship me the new one.

Seems pretty nice to me.

The only downside I see is that if you don't get a newly released card that is selling for the msrp everywhere else you are gonna pay more for the card. But the 8800gts 320 is selling for msrp most places.

Yeah, you'll be fine at 4xAA. There are a couple games where performance with AA starts to dip as low as 1600x1200, but 1680x1050 is a bit easier to run.

i've used evga's step-up before and it was a wonderful experience. i went through the same steps as Xarick.

purchased a 7800GT KO for $299 back in i think March/April 2006, then a few weeks later nvidia launched the 7900 series. saw that the 7900GT has 24pipes so i thought why not just use the step-up? by this time the MSRP of the 7800GT dropped and the 7900GT replaced the 7800GT's $299 price point. so i could've upgraded to just a regular 7900GT and just pay for the s/h. in the end i decided to upgrade to the SC verison for $60+s/h+tax which came out to about $75 bucks. received my new 7900GT KO SC in less than a week.

enjoy your new card, buddy

hmm.. so it will take about 2 weeks from the point you requested it from them?

and essesntially you pay the difference between their msrp & what you paid (plus shipping)?
