Well, hernia surgery went well!

The surgery was easy, it's the healing that's the hard part. He used one of those mesh patches. For all you that have had hernia surgery with the mesh patch, does it feel like a rock under the skin? Will that go away?

I would have whined until I got some. I bet you did 😉

btw, I'm glad you're all good now!!

Pain pills? wimp! I had none of those afterwards - but I didn't need a mesh. I was 19 at the time, dunno if age makes a difference to ease of/ speed of recovery. Yes, the bump does go... Glad to hear it went well! 🙂

Had a friend who had the mesh patch, which is secured inside abdominal wall in four places.
He went to smorgasboard two months after and big meal distended stomach, broke off patch.
He then broke it again riding bike.
His stomach looks like a railroad switchyard, from operations.
His belly hangs out over his belt, because they have to cut thru abs to install patch.
Now he can only eat small meals.
Ruined his whole life.

I think they can do it arthroscopically now (two small incisions) from outside with scope. Less destruction
of ab musculature.

cheers!

😀

Had a hernia operation when I was 12, had to relearn how to walk...havent had a problem since. (Knockin on wood as I type this) Just remember to relax and take it easy....this is your legitimate reason to be a lazy slob for the next two weeks. The mesh patch will soften and you will heal....but RELAX & HEAL.

so getting a hernia is pretty common huh?

what happens when you get a hernia?

you can really mess up your insides and only eat small meals? damn that sucks big time.

I was told by my doctor that males are more apt to get hernias. He cited something to do with the growth of the male anatomy.

The most common form of hernias are caused as follows. The testicles originate deeper within the body and gradually drop to the scrotum during development. As part of this they need to pass through the mulcular wall in the abdomen. A gap opens between muscle tissue, they pass through and the wall closes again. If that muscular wall doesn't close properly, then parts of the gut can poke through. That's what causes the characteristic bulge of a hernia. A complication can occur when a part of protruding gut gets starved of blood flow - that's dodgy and is called a hiatus hernia. The fix for a hernia is to sew together the adjacent sides of that gap in the muscular wall. When that's not possible (most frequently in older patients, I believe) then a mesh is used.

Please correct me if I'm wrong - but this is my understanding...
