Why does every fear thread have to turn into an argument about how slow it runs? 🙂

I'd rather see more benchmarks from people that have the full version.

How do I bench it? So far, I just know of the sample demo which you can access from the "Settings" screen. When I tried it, I got results VERY SIMILAR to the original post of this thread (guy with the 7800GTX) - of course, my settings are completley different from his...

My system is also quite pokey compared to most of you guys; A64 3000+, X800Pro, etc.

OK everyone. Here's a ton more benchies which show just how much AA makes this game chug. This is with my X850XT PE @ stock (540/590). CPU is an A64 @ 2.52 Ghz, 1GB DDR @ 260 MHz (see my sig for more details). This is the retail verison of FEAR with the 1.01 patch (which seems to have no discernable difference on speed unless I'm mistaken).

All graphics settings are on maximum and soft shadows are off. I have bolded resolution and average framerate to make it a bit more legible. This is the built-in FEAR "Test settings" demo.

And finally, I overclocked my card to 600/615 (this is what I play it at)

FPS:
Min: 22
Avg: 36

5% <25fps
73% 25 to 40fps
22% >40fps

This is going to make you cry:

1680X1050 (set in settings.cfg) 0AA/16AF, Card@ 600/615, soft shadows turned on

FPS:
Min: 9
Avg: 17
Max: 36

85% <25fps
15% 25 to 40fps
0% >40fps

Needless to say, it is completely unplayable at this high setting with soft shadows on. It performs pretty well (very playable) at 1680X1050 with 1Fx AA though. Especially at overclocked speed 😉. AA seems to kill performance - I'd rather take a jump in resolution than turn on AA, and performance is better too.

FEAR looks way better than any other game to date

You're being sarcastic, right?

I just finished FEAR and got a good look at all of its blockiness (right angles galore) and muddy textures (although the parallax was well done for the most part), and then ran D3 and HL2, and they look noticeably more polished. The character models are quite good, probably better than HL2 in most people's eyes.

As far as gameplay goes, I think FEAR is head and shoulders above D3 or HL2, so the fact that it doesn't have the *best* graphics didn't bother me excessively.

Installing the new 81.85 drivers seemed to help a lot BTW in terms of smoothness.

I agree. More people need to say this, and write emails to tech sites where editors make claims that it's the best looking game. I expect that from "mainstream media" but not from techie sites.

FARCry loooooks better than all those games in my oppinion but this is all down to oppinion.
Bring FEAR on with AAA and HDR enabled with softshadow and monkeys uncle wrench filtering....
