I cannot get past the "hunt for food" excuse. I just don't believe it.

I'd be very suspicious if the mother didn't setup the 8 year old to take the fall for her own actions.

There are some places in the US where this is very much a thing, either by personally hunting in their own/neighbor lands, or via donations from hunters/meat processing facilities. Both myself (grew up in TX) as well as my SO (grew up in upstate NY) knew such families.

The sort of families in this boat are poor, like outhouse, ground well, no vehicle, no electricity, no shoes poor.

I suspect she panicked and tried to come up with some plan to fix the situation. Resurrection, hiding it, or just something other than accepting what happened. Keeping her guns just sounds more reasonable in comparison. However, maybe she is just that shallow.
